We need to re-normalize not going to HR with every single little workplace problem. I’m all for people being held accountable but I think it makes the environment a lot better if people at least try to resolve issues on their own first.

As an HR rep, I’d much rather have over reporting than under reporting. Over reporting gives me a pulse on our workforce and I can always refer people back to their manager or help them think through conflict resolution. Under reporting means potential discrimination, HWE, safety issues, and a huge balloon of wtf waiting to pop on a random Tuesday.

Like if someone says something off to you that you didn’t like call them out on it, be clear that you want them to stop. If it continues that’s when you escalate.

The problem is that unless the issues are documented, your company would never do anything to help you with issues that come up and they can just escalate/multiply

I understand this point and I’m not saying that issues should be ignored forever. I’m just saying that step one shouldn’t be HR the first step should be asking them to stop. Obvs if something is completely outrageous it should go right to them but little petty things are not HR worthy especially a first offense

If it’s a little petty thing then HR will tell you to work it out yourself anyway

I worked at a nationwide corporation with regional branches, they did something about everything and it all goes onto that persons file/record that they had a complaint against them no matter how small
