MAYBE it’s the fact that tanning is rooted in trying to emulate POC while simultaneously discriminating against them. Tanning was done to look like you worked outside and labored intensively. And which community was forced outside to work all day??
i hate when people gatekeep regular tanning as if every white girl trying to tan is attempting to get as dark as a POC or something. girls who do that are problematic but it’s not all of us 😭

so as a white girl am i not allowed to sunbathe ? i don’t use tinted lotions or oils i use the highest SPF i can find.. like is it criminal that my skin produces small amounts of melanin in the sun ? i live in california it’s unavoidable

Sorry I’m Sicilian and that happens when I step out in the sun for .5 seconds

The poor community. POC aren’t POC bc they were in the sun all day. Tanning to emulate looking like you worked outside was not to emulate POC it was to emulate lower class white people, basically hippie culture. Which is a whole other ball game than trying to emulate POC.

I mean, tanning doesn’t stop at just sitting in the sun. I have no dog in this fight but let’s not pretend that’s the only length people go to

no but it’s unfair to group the regular people in with people who douse themselves in tanning oil and inject themselves with peptides, grouping everyone together takes away focus from the actual problem

well I mean yeah but your comment didn’t acknowledge the full scope of what OP is getting at, I personally don’t care what people do but I was just adding that

in the original quoted post the discourse is about regular tanning being seen as just as bad as the extreme tanning. so my point is that we need to not act like sunbathing is the equivalent to the extremes people go to because it’s not and it’s not racist to casually sunbathe either but some are treating it as though it is

Theres a different between how your body reacts to sunlight and making a prolonged effort to have darker skin for the sake of ascetics (I should specify I’m not Sicilian specifically but I’m Roman so I get it)

As an Irishman, it’s telling that you cannot discern between an indentured servant (which has a fixed time frame), and Chattel slavery which led to a system of heredity debt for people of color

I do know the difference, but we’re talking about people who don’t have a choice of what work they’re given and they’re similar in that way. They’re two different concepts, but we can’t say that only one group of people was forced to labor

Im not trying to say slavery did not happen I’m saying that in this argument your statement makes no sense. POC are not darker from working in the sun they are darker because they produce more melanin.
