i feel like we dont talk enough about how the bechdel test isnt some big feminist concept. it was created as a joke by alison bechdel for her comic dykes to look out for. it was always just a way for lesbians to pretend 2 women characters were gay
At this point saying you have passed the bechdel test is failing the bechdel test

i mean. as a lesbian even if she meant it as a joke it really does show how low the bar is for female characters where just having two of them TALK about something other than a man is a bar that frequently is not cleared

I’m talking about real life lol, had a friend say “we just passed the bechdel test” and it’s just like, but you brought up the fact we didn’t talk about men so it kinda defeats the purpose. I’m not saying the bar is low I’m just pointing out the irony. And op, lots of things that start as jokes become something more? I don’t see why you have a problem

i’m not the op? and i don’t have a problem i was just commenting? i didn’t know you were talking about real life bc you don’t mention that anywhere. i also don’t think saying that really defeats the purpose bc. i mean you still had a whole convo that didn’t involve men, pointing that out doesn’t change that 😭😭

First part was addressing you, second part was addressing op. And it does to defeat the purpose because then you’re just bringing up men.

do you think women can never bring up men without it cancelling out all the times they talk about other things..?

Not in this context, no? We were talking about cake, and then immediately following me saying I think white icing goes best with chocolate cake. She says “you know we just passed the bechdel test”. So yeah, it does cancel out and that situation. What a reach

what makes it cancel out?

It’s like saying “wow I went the whole day without breaking a pencil” and then breaking one on purpose.

maybe i just disagree with you then. bc even if you did that you’d still have a whole day where you didn’t break any pencils

No, you still broke one is the same day? Maybe we did have a conversation not about men, but did she deliberately brought up the fact that we didn’t talk about men, thus bringing up men?

this is turning into a glass half full/half empty convo. someone can bring up men in a conversation but i don’t think the fact men are brought up negates all the other moments they weren’t. you do. idk if there’s anything else to say on the topic

I’m not talking all other moments?? I’m just saying it negates that one conversation

okay. i don’t think bringing up men once even in a single convo negates every other moment in that convo when men weren’t brought up
