Just want to complain about something that happened the other day in my graphic design class at college, sorry if it’s long. TLDR Puerto Rican girl said i cant know spanish cause im a blonde white girl refused my help and almost damaged an antique machine

“White people can’t know Spanish” has always been a weird statement to me. Like do they forget SPAIN exists? And that’s on top of the fact that anyone can learn any language.

So my graphic design professor decided to give us an intro to letterpress the other day to encourage us to take the class next year, I am currently in letterpress and know my way around the studio and how everything works. We were put into groups of 3 or 4 to make posters using the print presses, each member had to contribute something. She took up 2/3s of the tray and refused to make it smaller, resulting in mine and the other member’s text being cut off the page.

When I tried to read what she put she immediately snapped at me in a rude tone saying “you can’t read it it’s in Spanish you don’t know Spanish”. “I’ve been taking Spanish classes since I was 10, my aunt is from Puerto Rico, I know Spanish and used to be fluent in it.” “No you can’t you know nothing cause your white. White people can’t know Spanish. You’re just a dumb blonde white girl.” This pissed me off so I chose to not even tell her she wrote everything backwards.

The rest of the class she was on her phone on tiktok on full volume loudly laughing at videos of girls dancing to music, standing in the way and refusing to move. Everything I did she criticized, saying I was doing everything wrong when it wasn’t, kept moving stuff making our letter blocks crooked. She has no experience in letterpress or typeface or etching, I’ve taken two of those classes. Keep in mind everything including the ink is as old as 1880-1980s, the machines were from museum.

She was being careless with the manual printing press and was adding too much pressure, I warned her and she ignored me, thankfully there was no damage to the roller and the light indent wasn’t permanent. The whole “white people are idiots and can’t speak other languages shit” she also pulled on the professor when he was reviewing our design, he then pronounced the saying perfectly like it was his native language. She seemed so pissed at that I almost laughed.

Tbh I kinda hope she gets in trouble with the professor cause she refused to clean up afterwards and even left early to go hang out with her friends. Me and our other group member had to stay an extra half hour cleaning up cause she didn’t do her share and we didn’t know where her type blocks came from
