Literally. One of my coworkers was bragging about how he got away with a speeding ticket after going 115 (!!) in a 65 (I believe in my state you’re supposed to automatically get jail time for that) that he can take a class so he doesn’t have to pay. 30 minutes later he’s talking about how “all these criminals should be thrown in detention centers, they know what they signed up for being illegal”.

I have no idea why descendants of white colonial settlers think it’s ok for them to be here because their ancestors came across the ocean to rob land, massacre indigenous people, and enslave African Americans. But it’s wrong for brown people to move to California to work when California was Mexico 1848.

So what about the people who came here legally and then get detained at their final court hearing? What about children? What about the fact that most of our ancestors came here before any of the absolute insane levels of bureaucracy put people on many year waiting lists? Do you personally know what the process is like? Do you know anyone who has tried to get citizenship?

I agree that people SHOULD come here and seek citizenship legally, but the process for doing so is a barrier that simply cannot be crossed by many people for SO many reasons. And many of those people are seeking asylum from their home country, are benefiting the US, and trying to better their lives and the lives of their families.

The fact that yall don’t think that ppl coming into our country illegally is a problem, you’re part of the problem. It’s illegal for a reason. They’re destroying our country rn do you not see the numerous videos online of them destroying cities, throwing rocks off overpasses that are shattering and destroying police officers cars, them throwing fireworks at officers that are just standing there, etc. THEY NEED TO GO. A criminal is defined as an individual whom commits crime. Is crossing the border without going through the process illegal? Yes. That’s why they’re called illegal immigrants. Therefore, committing a crime. Just because they aren’t hurting anyone doesn’t mean they aren’t criminals. As soon as they cross illegally, they’re criminals by definition. Grab a dictionary please. Thank you. Educate yourselves.

upvote 3 downvote

even in crimes, not all crimes are equal. for drinking it’s a 200-1000$ fine, and usually it’s 200. and the reason it’s a law in the first place is more so to create a social standard, not so much to punish people. most people are let off the hook as well, when my roommate got caught at a bar when he was 20 he was just talked to by cops and let go

upvote -1 downvote

baby that’s whataboutism- you’re arguing “oh but this other thing is more harmful” which is abandoning your original point that it’s pointless to differentiate civil offenders and criminals and your “all crimes aren’t equal” point doesn’t support the original one either you’re just yapping to yap

upvote 4 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #14 13w

not really villainizing, bc when you ask those people what these “criminals” deserve they say deportation, which is what they do deserve under that civil offense. it’d be different if they said that illegals deserve more punishment on top of that

i’m not inferring shit dawg i’m just proving a point that ok you agree not all undocumented immigrants should be described as criminals which goes back to negate your original point that it’s pointless to differentiate civil offenders and criminals. if you argue there’s an insignificant amount of people calling all illegal immigrants criminals that’s a different argument

upvote 2 downvote

Language is important. People DO refer to all undocumented immigrants as criminals and that is inaccurate and harmful

upvote 2 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #9 13w

that wasn’t the end of the convo the final point was that you SHOULDN’T refer to all illegals as something they’re not because it’s harmful which means the obvious to differentiate calling them criminals from civil offenders is because it’s harmful

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #9 13w

and by YOUR own admission- calling someone a criminal vs civil offender doesn’t necessarily tell you the severity of the offense meaning calling them a criminal has no technical utility in indicating the severity of the crime it only serves to create stigma

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #6 13w

well why in this case? bc this civil offense is pretty bad. at least bad enough to get deported. and criminal is only harmful if you infer it to be harmful, just like how driving with an expired tag is a crime, but calling that person a criminal is only bad to others inferring that label to be bad. and those people, not to be mean, are pretty dumb!

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #6 13w

and yes, it doesn’t indicate the severity of the crime. just like how civil offender doesn’t indicate the severity of the offense. stigma can be pretty bad. which is why differentiating it in order to compare it to jaywalking is in very bad faith

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #9 13w

oh hun, no i don’t agree with you, sorry. you’re calling regular people who happen to be in another county “criminals”, like the 90 year old undocumented man down the street is going to jump you. no. calling a group of people who’s only crime is escaping the violence of their homeland and being denied asylum “criminals”. you know who’s actually a criminal? look at the white house. people are being deported ON THEIR WAY TO BECOME LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #19 13w

these people are doing everything right, but they’re still being snatched from the streets. why? the legal system didn’t move fast enough. so calling people “criminals” and “illegals” adds a stigma to them that they don’t need.

language matters, hun. think of the difference between hearing the words “that female over there” vs “that woman over there”. both mean the same thing, but one is dehumanizing. same goes for calling undocumented people “illegals”. just call them undocumented, no need for the hateful language
