historically, it’s because of the different religious traditions and the protestant reformation. also anti-catholic sentiments from colonial times and xenophobia towards irish, italian, and eastern european immigrants that have stuck around

irish immigrants were discriminated against for being catholic along with other negative stereotypes. the kkk attacked catholic universities and individuals. protestants feared jfk was going to ruin america because he was a catholic. lowkey it wasn’t until the 1960s-1970s that catholicism became more accepted in america and protestants became friendly with catholics

if you wanna know more, look up the “know-nothing” movement! basically hatred towards immigrants is why so many people in the united states are misinformed or don’t see catholics as christians

no problem! there’s a book i’ve been meaning to read called “Anti-Catholicism in America, 1620-1860” by maura jane farrelly. from what i’ve seen, she talks about how the xenophobia that took place with catholic immigrants is similar with muslim immigrants in america today. since i haven’t read it yet though and i’ve run into issues with historians making interpretations that lead to oversimplified comparisons so no idea if her book is actually all that good when comparing the two

the deuterocanonical books are controversial, but the funny part is protestants were the ones to REMOVE them from their bibles lol while catholics had them in theirs from the beginning

there’s debate around that simply since the church states they just reaffirmed the texts in 1546, while some people interpret that as adding them to canon. i personally think that’s an incorrect interpretation but i haven’t dived too much into the council of trent because the reformation era is kinda boring to me ngl. i try to keep to my realm of interest in american and middle eastern history for the time being 😭
