The “gen z stare” is a direct product of the American obsession with the idea that the customer idea is always right and that we are not supposed to talk back to the customer and other countries don’t have this problem because they care about employees

when i worked at a pet store this man was screaming at me over god knows what, and i calmly said “sir can you please lower your voice” and my manager chewed me out over it. like i could have told him to go fck himself, but i didnt.

Facts but the way this just popped up as I was watching a TikTok about the Gen Z stare. The timing is ironic.

The one time I didn’t act like a my little pony on crack (bc my power went out and I had to wake up at 5am to drive and use my bf’s shower, and I had a broken finger as a barista) this one lady chewed me out because I made her feel like shit bc I didn’t smile at her

the way i literally made a list of things at work today that trigger my “gen z stare” and istg most of these are just common fucking sense, or like, comprehension issues or smth

It’s millennials saying we don’t know what it means and it’s when they come in and we immediately don’t acknowledge you and just stare. Meanwhile when they do come in they are either on the phone, not even paying attention, or don’t know what they want. When they finally decide they just jump into the order. What do you expect me to do. And they get so confused when I have to ask are they dining with us or taking it to go bc we offer both at the restaurant. Like you skipped that part

my fav thing is millennials and gen x slowly starting to admit they’re talking about the customer service stare, and not this entirely made up thing that doesn’t happen

I hated being a cashier 😭 old guys would always be like “you should smile more” “well don’t you look happy to be here” and shit like that and it’s like bro my job is to scan your shit and get you out of here sorry I don’t want to smile for 8 hours straight 😭

My coworker was horrified bc everyone knew I was always so positive w customers despite me being dead panned and sarcastic any other time when they were away.

At some point, I started blaming things on management, it was often their fault anyway for poor planning. Often me saying after checking if we have stuff in stock on my phone “thank you for being patient with me , unfortunately we are out of it even if the back room. This place is never organized and it even makes the online customers suffer too.” Obviously, this was never a 100% solutions because some people are unpredictable but I never said sorry because it makes them angry

The amount of times I’ve gone “good morning 🥰” as an ex hostess and the customer just cut me off and went “FOUR” I was itching not to just yell back “FIVE”

As a server I'd greet tables, and they'd just respond with "water" well one night I was fed up and went "let's try that again, bc I don't think that's how you respond to ppl saying hello." They didn't like that and I got a shitty tip but at least i got that outta my system.

i’m a host and whenever i ask how someone is doing and they don’t answer i just keep asking till they answer in a tone that gets more concerned every time like a “are you guys okay can everyone hear is something wrong?” kinda voice 😭 im this 👌 close to responding with “wow a number is an odd emotion” when i ask how they’re doing and they say how many they have
