That’s so upsetting 😭 at that point in the convo id ask a follow up question, since you started the convo and based on how they respond I can tell if I should continue the convo if that makes sense. Like ‘what brought you here?’ Or ‘how do you like x so far?’ If it’s in class I’d ask an academic question or some self deprecating ‘this class is already killing me with readings’ and j see how they respond. If their not giving you anything not your fault they’re not in the mood to make friends

in class (before or after, not during), in my apartment building, in elevators, really anyone who isn’t on the move or busy i guess. they usually check their phones to avoid eye contact lmao. like maybe i’m coming on to strong idk

when there’s something to talk about i’ll talk but im not gonna find out wether id get along with someone over superficial small talk. the last friend i made in school i approached her after she called out a guy’s misogynistic remark. but genuinely whats there to talk about after “where r u from” “isnt it so cold in here” “ugh im so hungry”

or think of smth random/ interesting. like if u get in a convo thats not rlly going anywhere, or especially if ur making conversation during group work you could ask a random open ended question so their response is long enough to start a conversation

And for making friends they really do happen randomly. Sometimes thro small talk sometimes thro mutual trauma bonding. Ask classmates if they want to study together, or grab food after class. Can also go to college club events and chat then. Pro tip pl love talking abt themselves, if you get stuck keep asking questions abt them and they’ll think highly of you cause u seem invested in them
