Since most of you are American I’m curious, why are people here so concerned in taking a train? I’m leaving for the weekend and don’t drive so it makes the most sense but I have people offering to drive me nearly 3 hours over taking the Amtrak.

The train system is incredibly neglected here and a lot of bad stuff happens on trains and in/around stations, unfortunately :/

I didnt know this app was available outside of America :o but anyway Americans are very used to associating public transit with being unreliable or too expensive (Amtrak definitely isn’t cheap) and bc of the automobile industry propaganda pushed on us for decades, ppl have a DIY attitude towards travel. It’s common for families to choose to drive across the country instead of fly even if it’s not actually cheaper in the long run

Where I lived before it was completely normal to take ~6 hour trips to go skiing or on a weekend trip, and I’ve also done up to 13 hours to visit my grandparents on my own and these were often late night/early morning but my train is in the middle of the day and only 3 hours.

There was a beheading in California on a bus in the 90s and everyone is vaguely scared of public transport now. I’ve greyhound-ed twelve hours many times before and never had any issues. Americans are generally very classist and the bus/train systems tend to be the least expensive ways to travel, ie attract poorer people, ie people clutching their pearls. Ur gonna see some homeless people at the station. 99% chance they completely leave you alone, 1% chance they ask you for money. It’ll b fine.

I think there’s a difference between subway trains and above ground trains like Amtrak. I take Amtrak everywhere and it’s awesome!!! I think I’ve gone on like 14 trains so far this year and got 8 more before the end of the year lmao. Subways are a lot more unsafe but Amtrak is amazing

European perspective just based on vibes: when I travel back home in Europe it feels weird to drive to another country but here in the US it feels weird to take a train. The landscape and the drives are so beautiful and relaxing to me. The US was made for roadtripping, at least for me

I grew up in very rural America and didn’t travel on my first train or subway as an adult until I went to Chicago a couple years ago, and my bf had to coach me through keeping my eyes down but not appearing distracted, and still keeping an eye on everyone around me as discreetly as possible. Also of course holding onto my stuff as tightly as possible

This was my dad driving us from NW Ohio to San Diego in like 3 days and making stops at major landmarks along the way 😭 meanwhile I was in the back car sick the whole time. I fucking love public transit and I wish there was a more nationwide train system to use

I’m actually half American but barely grew up here, I go to uni in the US! My Amtrak was only $30 with flex- which would usually be like 70€ on DB for this distance 😭 I can definitely see what you mean with the driving across the country thing too, I fly very often and it surprises a lot of people even though my flights are as low as $80 round trip for 1.5 hours instead of an 8 hour drive.

Trains and other public transportation is generally safe here, ppl rely too heavily on alarmist news that makes us scared of each other. I’ve traveled many times on Chicago transit along with in many other cities. It’s fine. Just be aware of your surroundings

As a city girl yall really didn’t need to do all that. The subway is fine. Amtrak is even safer. News (especially conservative leaning news) tends to lean into really overdramatized and basically untrue narratives about cities and subways. Just don’t fall asleep and you’ll be fine. TBH even then you’re probably good

This but to add on to the classist part a lot of it is rooted in racism. It doesn’t get said directly usually but a lot of people are just scared of black people.

That’s honestly fair, for distance I haven’t really travelled by train in the US but I’ve done both in EU. I will say with just going around like the city or so I’m a lot more comfortable on public transit back there than here

Oh absolutely. I’m lucky I live in a city with very good public transit now in the US, but when I was living in LA I was scared of public transit. Europe is a bit more homogeneous, here it all depends

I think the anxiety just comes from a place of growing up near Toledo, which at least when I was in high school was in the top 5 for highest human trafficking rates in the country. Plus my bf and I live around cincy now and the random violent crime is so bad and constant that it’s safer for us to assume everywhere is like that, unfortunately :/
