I just learned that women can literally get pregnant when they are already pregnant. It is called superfetation. I swear to fucking god nature hates us. WE ARE NEVER SAFE. 😭😭😭😭

It’s only happened like 10 times we know in humans. And technically that’s what happens for fraternal twins, it’s just spaced farther apart

Like imagine being pregnant and then getting pregnant again with a fucking non-twin baby that you will birth weeks after the first one! What the actual fuck?! Going through labor then literally ripping your coochie open AGAIN. 😭

So does that mean it’s twins?? 🤨

it doesn’t always happen that they’re so far apart that you give birth at different times, often you just have both of them. Idk maybe I’m just weird but I think it’s kinda cool that it can happen lol.

Not exactly, twins happen when one fertilized egg splits in half. This happens when another egg is released and fertilized after the first one is already implanted/developing on its own. It can be weeks later.

you're about 75%! the splitting of one single egg results in identical twins, while having two fertilized eggs results in fraternal twins! however, you're correct in saying superfetation ≠ twins. the two pregnancies (twin vs. superfetation) hold a number of similarities though!

Roughly 0.0001% if that

Yeah I was gonna say, I feel like the birth of the first will just trigger the birth of the second.

Idk why people are crashing out from my first impression I think it’d be more of a drag to pop out the first and then instantly get pregnant again vs just surprise 2 at a time

I thought most twins were fraternal??

Yes, about 2/3 twins are fraternal. I just mean they both happen from separate eggs being fertilized

Dizygotic twins usually are fertilized from the same encounter, in some instances the twins can be fertilized from different encounters and become twins still

most of the time the babies are close enough together that it isn’t a big issue, and survival rate for a baby after 30 wks of pregnancy is in the 90 percents. if there’s other complicating factors then maybe, but generally they’re not far apart enough for it to be a big issue.

I am a fraternal twin, I just assume most people don’t understand how we happen lol 😂 identical is the “default” twin concept.
