Gen question, how do I stop getting annoyed at picky eaters? I don’t know if it’s just this one guy that irrationally annoys me but I try not to be judgmental because he has autism so I know it’s probably an autism thing.

Im autistic with a really large palette and ive struggled with this too. The thing that rlly helped me was to realize how much legitimate discomfort it causes for picky eaters to eat things they dont like. Like do you have any sensory things that just totally make you bug out? Like brushing your dry hair after swimming in chlorine or smth. Also a lot of autistic ppl are picky because stomach issues are comorbid with autism so it could also cause gastrointestinal distress.

i’m confused what advice you’re looking for. what exactly bothers you? is it the feeling of food being wasted? do you think it’s immature?

… which is why I’m asking for help? It’s more about how we mostly eat out when we hang out and none of the places I mention he wants to go to so it’s always his choice

I think it might stem from the fact that when we first met, he said he loved all food except for sushi & wasn’t picky & also that he was like a smoker like me but he’s not a smoker & he hates like most food. So it’s like why did you lie to me in the first place? Why try to mirror me. I mostly get annoyed at the fact that he only will go to places he wants to go to. And yes it also annoyed that he’s so wasteful with food, like multiple times he hasn’t liked his food and then it goes to waste

Which just really bothers me as someone who has dealt with food insecurity through out my life. Like I can count the number of times I’ve thrown out full meals on one hand

Oh we were gonna go camping and we were trying to put together a list of things we could make and he Hayes like everything. No one else’s pickiness really bothers me that much I don’t if it’s just the fact he lies about not being picky idk

Like when i had trouble judging picky eaters i just thought they were willfully ignorant to trying foods i liked but its really that theres an aversion not built in ignorance but rather pain and discomfort. It is still annoying sometimes to try and accommodate if everyone wants other stuff but for camping you can have bro bring the things he likes yk?

do you think the lying bothers you more than the pickiness? like if he hadn’t said he liked everything do you think it would still bother you?

Yeah I def do have some sensory & ocd issues too when it comes to food and other things. Like i don’t eat meat & ppl judge me for it but im not usually this bothered by pickiness so idk if it’s everything i described above that makes me this annoyed. I think also too that he’s unwilling to try any cultural food so idrc about the food he knows he doesn’t like but he just doesn’t seem open to anything that isnt American. But those are good things to remind myself of. Ty for actually giving advise

Yeah maybe, I don’t think I’d be nearly as annoyed if he just owned it vs still pretending to not be picky 😭

Ya ofc! Ik autistic and ocd strong sense of "justice" can go hand in hand and for me having a large palette, especially a culturally varied one seems "just" so sometimes i can get a real bee in my bonnet over things that are not that deep. This being said i do indeed raise an eyebrow when ppl cant fathom eating other cultures' foods. Although i can kinda get i can see how itd follow from an aversion to new sensations or potential stomach reactions.
