One thing I hate is when people compare smut to erotica. Idk what anyone says they aren’t the same. I’m reading a romance book that has sex scenes, but the whole book isn’t revolved around sex. Dark romance also isn’t always revolved around sex it’s these new authors that are ruining the it. 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
In general, reading something vs seeing something, leaves a lot to imagination, to the person themselves. It’s like violence. Being exposed to violence in books is less jarring than visually seeing it. Same with sex. There is always a boundary that keeps it separated from reality. Aggressive sex in porn, and unrealistic expectations for sex is a direct result of videos. Not books/smut, lol.
i feel like the majority of porn is made for the male gaze. it’s typically about control and usually involves a lot of violence. the point isn’t about the build up or the intimacy. it’s very objectifying. for smut, it’s more about the tension and the build about. it’s about being pursued and valued. it involves story telling and humanizing the characters. and, like you said, one obviously has much more impact on real human lives than others.
in the literal sense there are more victims of porn and greater societal ramifications. However I still dislike how easy smut can be obtained and how normalized it is in comparison to porn. my little sister was like 10 when she randomly bought a book from a used bookstore and had no idea there were extremely explicit scenes. like downright dirty. and it looked like a kids/teen book too
did i say smut is completely unproblematic?? OR did i say that the amount of harm done by one is so much more than the other that they cannot be compared? let me walk you through it. obviously they’re comparable as to the *type* of media they are. i am specifically talking about the implications and societal consequences of each. since one is wildly more harmful than the other, they’re not very comparable.
