I did social work straight out of undergrad for pretty much 2 yrs. I’m not going to lie I hated it. Idk how it is in other states but social work in NYC is not for the weak of heart well social work in general. At first you start truly wanting to make a difference and be there for the families. But you soon realize the system is broken and corrupted. It was an office and field work job. I was starting my days at 9am and ending at 10pm sometimes 11pm. I had to do home visits all over the city
I’m so sorry you hated it :( I do want to make a difference in the field as someone who’s been in the system many times in my childhood. I promise you did make a difference to those you helped, those late hours show how much you truly care and I’m hope your liking your new position!
You will make a difference. Trust me you will you just have to learn how to navigate the system that it benefits the families. The problem isn’t the families it’s the system and agency. They see the families as cash cows and make it impossible to close the cases. In my case I loved my families but hated my agency they didn’t care about the workers and overworked us.
