I feel very behind in life because I grew up with really strict immigrant parents and now I’m 22 and so lost in life. I feel like I missed out on a key part of being young and now I’m an adult with zero life experience in anything

If it makes you feel better, even most people without strict parents experienced this due to lockdown and the prevalence of phones in our youth. No one really had high school or college parties. The upside of this is that now people in their 20s party like they’re in their teens! You’ve still got loads of time — 25 yo, started going out at 23

don’t worry i feel the same way. my mom was (still is) very strict while i was growing up, i could barely do anything. so now that i’m 21 in college i low-key feel like an imposter out in the world 🫩

First Gen American with immigrant parents here! I feel you. If this is of any reassurance, your life has just started.

Like when ppl were cultivating like core teen experiences (dating, experimenting with who they are, drugs, sex idk) I was locked up in my room studying all day bc my parents controlled my every move 😔

Like I mourn the person I could’ve been if my parents actually nurtured and cared for me instead of subjecting me to emotional abusive, a dysfunctional home, and being overbearing/strict

And with dating, I also felt frustrated with my lack of experience. My ex took advantage of that, but we also ended because of that. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have sex before marriage without feeling like I’m going against my core values. If it makes you feel any better, the dating market is rough rn. I’ve had good people want me despite my lack of experience (although we weren’t compatible for other reasons). It gets better eventually. I promise.

How do you approach the topic of being inexperienced? It scares me so much for when I start dating seriously

Do not disclose it initially for your own safety. Be firm about your boundaries, and if they don’t respect it, cut it immediately. Then just seek someone who’s patient and understanding
