i think parents who let their kids know about their financial struggles before they’re old enough to work are horrible parents. your kids can’t do anything about your financial issues so why tell them? why put that stress on them so young???

Because sometimes kids need to understand why they can't have or do certain things, I was never allowed the fancy snacks or new clothes, etc because we couldn't afford it. Knowing that was a lot better for me, because I had an explanation rather than thinking my parents just didn't listen to what I wanted and ignored me. Obviously it shouldn't be completely put on the child but showing your child they won't get everything that someone else gets is okay and for me helps me work harder.

j only learned yesterday how badly the 2008 recession hit my family. moved into a house where the living room was smaller than my old bedroom 😭 i liked that house tho even if i did have to share room with my sister. if i wanted to be alone i could just go sleep in the den

you can tell them they can’t have or do certain things without telling them you’re poor 😭 like having grown up clueless to how badly we struggled when my mom would cry herself to sleep about it i can assure you i still learned i can’t always get what i want. i still had a really fun and stress free childhood because my parents cared enough to make that happen. why burden someone who can do nothing to help with stress? that’s just wrong

like kids don’t even have the mental capacity to fully understand the issues if they are told and then that just gives them anxiety or guilt. if you were old enough to understand then that’s cool!! you still didn’t deserve all that stress on you when you couldn’t do anything about it yourself

Because obviously there's a way to do it without putting stress on them? I knew about our financial situation and never once felt stress because of the way they handled it. I knew they struggled and also had an amazing childhood. There's different ways to parent and neither are wrong regarding this situation/ diff families. It's good for a child to know about a family's situation and make them aware of what to ask for and what is inappropriate. That doesn't inherently put stress on the child.

A lot of therapists would disagree with this. It’s fine to say “no honey we can’t get that right now we have to use our money elsewhere but maybe later if we have extra we will come back” but being like “I can’t pay rent we are gonna get kicked out” is being a shitty parent
