Hot take: “your brain doesn’t develop until you’re 25” is just a cop-out and a way to infantilize young adults/attempt to prevent them from making adult decisions. Not to mention it’s not even accurate because our brains are ALWAYS developing

hard disagree, people make adult decisions before 25 literally all the time. most people choose their career path at like 18-20. i’ve never heard anyone use this as a cop-out, i only ever hear it from people who realize that they’ve matured compared to how they were when they were younger, which makes sense

i was literally told i shouldn’t be planning my future bc my brain isn’t developed yet and should be doing childish things… or that im mature for my age for having some sort of path… huh???

No. This is very much a post made by someone who doesnt prefer research over tiktok or something

when people say brain they’re specifically referring to the prefrontal cortex, in charge of impulsivity and critical thinking. and yes it reaches its most developed *around* age 25. humans are born purposely underdeveloped because mothers would not survive childbirth otherwise, so yes, even decades later, still developing lol

this is a medical and scientific fact. yeah ofc u can’t justify something like murder, but evidently someone who is 30 is going to be more mature and level headed and have had much more experiences than a 23 year old

Most people are not aware that it’s the prefrontal cortex specifically. They hear “brain develops at age 25” and run with it. It is an unfortunately common fallacy that pisses me off bc it’s not really accurate

?? saying “your brain isn’t developed until you’re 25 so you shouldn’t xyz until then” is the tiktok take that is not based on actual facts/research

Thisss thank you #4, I didn’t know how to word my reply but “your brain doesn’t develop until 25” is probably the most tiktok sentence of all time 🥸

this is interesting too because i’ve almost always seen prefrontal cortex referenced specifically. even tiktok trends are like i just felt my prefrontal cortex develop

I’m not saying people DONT make adult decisions, but I’ve seen this sentence used against young adults the most in an attempt to discourage them from making decisions such as getting a tattoo, getting married, or having a child.

i guess i’ve just never seen that. that’s kinda shocking to me because it’s extremely normalized to make all those decisions before 25 imo

Yeah I see it a lot in this community, the last time I saw it used was against someone who was talking about getting married before 25 and everyone whipped out the “ur brain isn’t fully developed yet 🤓” argument

i would be a bit apprehensive about a 22 year old marrying a 30 year old just because at that age your partners have only been ppl from ur hs and college so you don’t have a lot of experience coexisting w a partner in a real adult setting w full time jobs & responsibilities.

age gap and difference in life experience are valid points to bring up, but your brain “not being developed” is not imo. does everyone make the best decisions at 22? hell no. but they’re old enough to make the decisions and live with the consequences if any

Please point me to relevant scientific and medical literature that says your brain is developed at 25, point blank period. Bc it’s not gonna say that. It’s gonna say the PREFRONTAL CORTEX is developed AROUND 25 but it’s not like u wake up on ur 25th birthday like “yippee I can make smart decisions now!! 😺” think critically please

The developed argument is dumb but I also wouldn’t encourage getting married before 25 since they usually doesn’t end well
