And let’s say you do report it. Congrats, you are now at even greater risk of violence from that person because reporting a rape doesn’t mean the rapist is automatically convicted and locked up. In fact, even if they did go to jail immediately, they’d probably be able to post bond because it’s not going to be very high for a rape where the victim lives. Now you have a pissed off rapist who knows their victim. It’s a dangerous move.
People who have never experienced sexual or domestic violence have no grasp on the realities of the justice system and how dangerous it is for victims to seek out help through that system. I didn’t report my rape because it was my ex. He knew where I lived, and had indirectly threatened violence before. It felt safer to just let it go.
