What birth control options work best for people with really bad cramps? I get migraines so I have to do non hormonal options which narrows it down quite a bit

Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure only hormonal has been shown to decrease cramping, but a copper iud might help

if you get migraines w/ aura you can typically still do progesterone only birth control methods, but a copper is the only non hormonal method and is known to increase cramping, flow, and make your period last longer

I also get migraines btw, but I will say I have a hormonal iud and it hasn’t increased my migraine frequency (depo did, especially when I would be a week out from taking new dose)

#2 nailed it! Progestin-only options are typically safe for people with migraines with aura. Options include a hormonal IUD, pill, implant, or shot*. All can ease cramps. If your migraines don’t include aura, it also may still be safe to use estrogen and it can sometimes relieve migraines, but it can also make them worse, so work closely with your doctor if you’re interested in that. *I don’t recommend the shot unless it’s a last resort due to its unique side effects.
