Idk if I’m even surprised by this response. People swear up and down that they know how contraception works and then prove themselves wrong with every sentence.

This is not a good plan. Please reconsider. How far out is the date you’re planning to have sex?

True but my window of opportunity for the levonorgestrel to be effective is closing and she probably won’t be able to respond in time 😭😭

I’m not asking for anyone’s permission to do it, I know how it works, I’m just need help calculating which day would be best to take it based on my cycle and OPK tests 😭

Exactly, which is why if I wait until my fertile window to take it (when I’m planning on having sex), then it will be ineffective. But that won’t happen because I track my LH so if I see the surge then I’ll assume I’ll be ovulating and I won’t risk having sex.

Wait how??? People are saying I’m good as long as I’m using condoms, so how would delaying ovulation INCREASE my chances of pregnancy??

Naurrrr I thought it was pretty solid :( can you explain why? I plan to have sex this weekend (my cycle day 11-12). My predicted day of ovulation is my cycle day 15. I use OPK strips to track my LH and so far there has been no LH surge, but I’m approaching my predicted fertile window (assuming ovulation isn’t delayed). And since levonorgestrel has a half life of ~24-32 hours, I’m guessing taking it around day 11-12 would have the highest likelihood of preventing that LH surge to delay ovulation

HEY OMG someone mentioned getting opill, i completely forgot that was a thing!!! Do you think i could start taking opill tomorrow and continue through the weekend in order to prevent ovulation???? I don’t want to take it long term but could this be an option for a one time thing??

You could tell me you’re planning taking it exactly as intended and I’d still tell you it’s a bad idea. Plan B is not something you should ever plan to rely on. It’s a last ditch resort for when something goes wrong. Opill is effective after 48 hours, so, when you take your third pill. It does not primarily work by preventing ovulation, so that piece doesn’t matter. It’s not great to jump on and off birth control, but bits better with a progestin-only pill like Opill and it’s better than Plan B

Just be sure you’ve had at least 3 pills correctly spaced out before sex and continue for at least 7 days after sex to allow for any sperm to die so it can’t get you pregnant after your protection lapses. Ideally, continue the pill as intended. OPK tests only show a surge in LH a couple days before ovulation, so having sex up until then can result in pregnancy due to the lifespan of sperm. OPK tests also don’t confirm ovulation happened, just that your body attempted, making them less reliable.

Consider BBT charting if you want to continue with a fertility awareness method without putting yourself at so much risk. Also note that all fertility awareness methods will be unreliable for a bit as your body adjusts on and then back off the hormones. You’ll need to use condoms for until you can see your cycle is back to normal. But really, ideally just stay on Opill or talk to your doctor about starting another reliable method. You think this is a one off but it’ll happen again.

Yeah I know that if I use a hormonal method (whether that’s plan b or opill) I can’t rely on my usual cycle indicators for a couple months. I’m fine with that bc we don’t usually have much sex anyways so we can wait a couple months, we just wanted to do it for our anniversary. Also idk why I have to keep repeating this but we ALWAYS USE CONDOMS 100% of the time 😭

And this definitely is a one off thing. We’ve been together for 5 years never having sex during my fertile window, but it’s our anniversary and we planned a super romantic weekend so sue me if I wanna get freaky w my man😭

Oh yeah I don’t use OPK tests as like the end all be all. I just thought it could give me somewhat of better idea of when ovulation is happening rather than relying on what’s predicted in my app (I use clue). I basically only ever have sex in my luteal phase, like right before my period, so I steer clear of anything around that fertile window. I just like to collect data and keep track of things just in case. I’ve tried BBT but I can’t find an accurate enough thermometer 😭
