Try the Nuva ring (my honest recommendation) and tell your doctor you don’t want to have your period so you don’t have to go the week without it.

It’s the most effective method! It’s even better than some forms of sterilization. Side effects can vary, but irregular bleeding is the most common. That can be frequent or infrequent bleeding, but it’s usually lighter and with less cramps than a period. What’s drawing you to the implant?

It’s the exact same hormones as the arm implant and iud so if you respond well but don’t want to deal with replacing it once a month yourself, then go for a more semipermanent option like the iud or the arm one

Does this ring go in the arm too? I’m not interested in shoving anything anywhere and I’m okay with having periods I just don’t want mind numbing cramps.

So the nuva ring inserts kind of like a tampon, it’s something you just do yourself. You can’t feel it and you have sex with it in. Extremely easy to remove as well. If you aren’t comfortable putting anything in your vagina then you can do the arm birth control but the insertion can be nasty and it can move around in your body or break and need immediate attention, and lasts half as long as an iud.

Have you ever been on a birth control before? Because going from nothing to a fairly permanent and expensive arm implant is a jump (just because you could get bad symptoms from it and you don’t want to get it only to have to remove it)

No I’ve never been on it but uhh I’d rather not stick anything up my vag I get too paranoid about shit getting stuck or disappearing

Okay that makes sense! Is there a reason you wouldn’t want to try a pill form?

It’s lowkey embarrassing…… idk how to swallow pills. I’ve tried every method but my gag reflex doesn’t allow it so I typically hav to crush up pain killers and put it in juice then take it like a shot

My friends are all on the pill and they’ve tried different methods. At first I was thinking the shot but my friend said it hurt like badddd so I decided not to. Then I didn’t wanna be in pain bc I forgot to take a pill (I also can’t swallow pills) so I decided if I don’t have to worry about it for like three years that would be great!!

Sounds like you should go for it! It’s actually good for 5 years; the manufacturer just hasn’t filed for the extension because it’ll lower their sales because of less frequent replacements. You can always get it removed early if it’s not the right method for your body.

So I would like to bring up that extreme cramping isn’t healthy and could be due to a health issue like endometriosis (which 1/10 women have/get diagnosed with eventually) so sometimes just taking birth control to fix it is just symptom management rather than addressing the underlying condition, so it would be good to talk to a doctor and go to a gynecologist to make sure there is nothing causing the cramping.

Now, I personally don’t recommend jumping to a semipermanent option just because if you get side effects or respond poorly to the hormones, it’s going to suck. But there are dissolvable birth control pills/tablets that you put in water to drink which you could ask your doctor about so you don’t have to swallow a pill

Femlyv is the name of one of the birth controls that is taken orally but you don’t have to swallow a pill if you want to look into it yourself!

Oh also, if you want to try the non medical route, you could try raspberry leaf tea for your cramps. It helps manage your hormones to reduce excess inflammation even for people with endometriosis (like me). Also pure Cacao powder is high in magnesium and helps prevent cramping especially when eaten with bananas which are high in potassium which also helps prevent cramping. (These are all studied remedies that proved effective and not just theoretical)
