likely a scammer. a common (but very simple + low-efficacy) tactic is they text you randomly with something like “hi tina, do you want to go golfing?” or something like what you got because it’s very obviously not meant for you. the next step is you reply and say “sorry, wrong number” and then they say “oh i’m so sorry for bothering you, i hope i didn’t disturb you, have a nice day.” when you say “no worries” they come back and say “wait you’re nice, can we be friends?”
they then try to rope you into a conversation by telling you fake details about their name, age, and job and send fake selfies. almost always a relatively attractive single asian woman in her 30s because that’s what would get the most attention from the most gullible population (old men).
they attempt to build trust and a friendship and stuff and will eventually ask for a couple dollars to get gas or something and then pay you back. this makes you think they’re trustworthy and have real money so when they inevitably ask for a bigger loan you give it to them and they delete all their information and disappear completely off the internet along with your money. sorry for the long description but if you don’t recognize a number, simply don’t bother answering!
yeah me too. there are only so many possible phone numbers so there are probably bots cycling through everything. the best way to get rid of them is to not respond. even blocking them shows them it’s an active number! so just things like not responding to messages instead of blocking, or ignoring any calls instead of declining them will help
weird tactic that works for me (I don’t do it if number looks foreign or anything bc I don’t want some hidden charge of sorts? like a toll phone) is answering with mute automatically on and letting both of us sit in silence for 29 seconds exactly. They then think I’m a bot too I think bc I rarely get calls back from spam when I do
