I realized that growing up super pale in the current culture has made me believe that I could never be as pretty as people of color. Do we think white girls genuinely aren’t as pretty as other ethnicities, or is it everyone telling me to tan + other*?

*everyone telling me to tan + only ever seeing girls with darker skin tones getting explicitly uplifted for their skin tone I feel like I’ve come to believe that we white people look kinda washed out.

I kind of think this too. I’m puertorican and white, but my skin tone is light and that’s supposedly a joke to people? Like they make me feel odd for not being darker. I don’t get it.

i think there’s like a sweet spot of skin tone in terms of beauty standards bc at least in the US being darker does NAWT mean you fit within beauty standards

My heritage is mostly northwestern European and I’ve gotten it too, from people of all ethnic groups. “You’re translucent”, “get some sun”, “pearly white”, “hey, *insert Tim Burton character*”. It’s wild.

Darker women are so stunning though, people like Lupita Nyongo’o and Simone Ashley are DEFINITELY fitting the beauty standard in the US -in Gen Z spaces-. Their skin tones are stunning. Outside of Gen Z spaces, the standards were set by creeps like the President who are going to keep losing their influence as people realize just how disgusting their whole circle was.

(Literally setting the standards by running things like Miss Teen USA, but at the time people didn’t realize it was while doing heinous things to teens and young adults)

obviously darker women are stunning and things are getting better over time but colorism is still very much real and prevalent in our culture. it’s like darker women HAVE to be flawless and fit the beauty standard in every other way possible or else nah they don’t fit the beauty standard

Tbh I think we all have to be flawless to fit it these days, all women can stand in solidarity over that 😅

girl if we’re talking beauty standards. women of color particularly women of darker skin tones still face heightened levels of scrutiny when it comes to attractiveness that’s not my opinion it’s just true

I can’t imagine what it’s like, because the scrutiny is already insane without that factor.

Who does the bullying come from?

society, people online, white people, even poc who have internalized racism. the dominant culture functions on white supremacy. dark skinned women often grow up getting shit on for having dark skin. i literally saw a video the other day of a little indian girl crying and saying she wishes she had light skin bc the kids at school were making fun of her for it

It’s insane that we can’t win…that people are literally out there making fun of the lightest and darkest people 🤦🏻‍♀️ Is it just bc we’re further from the average skin tone? I don’t get it 😭
