I agree that we shouldnāt sexualize cultures and religious devotions, but you should also take into account that being forced into the order was a way that women (especially non-conventionally attractive women, women with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ women) were historically oppressed, because unmarried women were often forced into the church. It was a way of policing female sexuality. Many also faced emotional, physical and sexual abuse. For some, itās a way of taking that power and history back.
Mmk soo you have a problem when itās slutty nuns but when nuns are literally in HORROR MOVIES itās perfectly acceptable? You canāt stop ppl from dressing up as what they want to. Am I saying that they should hn but if they want to itās their choice Halloween isnāt supposed to be sexualized at all but what are we gonna do abt it ?
Mmk soo theres a difference between disrespecting a religion and displaying a juxtaposition between good and evil based on fake stories.... horror movies aren't real!! Having so little clothing on while referencing religions is real. Ofc not everyone will follow what we tell them to be mindful of..... which is why OP is bringing up the issue on this platform.... so that a few people might be able to see and realize that they shouldn't be doing allat
respect of religion supersedes that of profession, religion is what you devote your life to, and as a nun itās in every aspect of your life. itās fucked to dress as any other religionās most devout figures and everyone seems to understand that, so itās weird that people decide nuns are different. a job on the other hand isnāt necessarily a way of life - itās something you can clock out of at the end of the day for most people, unlike being a nun when serving the Lord is your lifeās purpose
itās gross to sexualize any group of women that have made significant moves to de-sexualize and objectify themselves as a main part of their life. nobody should be sexualized against their will, but for nuns itās CLEAR and OPEN that they do NOT want to be sexualized, whereas some other women do, and thatās also okay
Respect of religion doesnāt supersedes respect of any kind. All of those professions make vows just like nuns do. And you forget that people devote themselves to both. My mother is a devout Christian, but sheās also a doctor. She turns to God for both. Being a doctor is not just a job to people. Itās a calling for some just like my mother. And you can also back out of being nun just like any other profession.
Native Americans are constantly belittle and disrespected especially in America where Halloween is celebrated. Religion (Christianity, Baptism, and Pentecostal) are seen as MOST normal in America. One went through horrible oppression and violence just for being here. I agree that it isnāt okay but you comparing oranges to apples.
Thatās a problem of those individuals who didnāt want to live the life of a nun but were forced to. That isnāt remotely a problem with the lifestyle itself. This is desecrating a group of individuals because of the mistakes of a select few of their members, literally the exact things that kills queer people every single day. This is not an excuse for sexualizing an innocent culture.
Itās probably not meant to then again, we do typically see more of women in professional positions being turned into sexy costumes more than we see men. Even if the intent isnt there, itās still being done. Being in college I see it all the time. Thereās nothing wrong with wanting to be sexy of course but when I see women dressed up sexy doctors or cops, it weirds me out. Even sex military costumes. Thatās just my opinion though.
Thatās not the remotely the same thing. We are talking about how itās explicitly in the vows of being a nun to abstain from sex, marriage, dating, etc. and to escape from sexuality as a form of worship, so to sexualize it is disrespectful to the core of what it is and going against the wishes of every woman in it. Itās dressing up about the abuse of women and the way men would sexualize women who didnāt want sex explicitly because they KNEW they didnāt want sex and that made it hotter.
im not a descendant of them but im pretty involved in the Catholic Church. they also may not have been repulsed by it, considering that they may not have actually made the choice to devote themselves to the church. the nature of the costume is commenting on how women are sexualized no matter what we do - even modesty itself is sexualized - so we should wear and do what we want without worrying about being sexualized because it will happen anyway.
first of all, it wasnāt a few individuals, this used to be fairly common. I agree that thereās nothing wrong with the lifestyle itself - most women in the order nowadays chose a life of devotion and thatās very respectable. iām just saying that there is more to the slutty nun costume than just wanting to sexualize or make fun of a religious position.
just to clarify Iām not saying people should dress up as slutty nuns because clearly people donāt get it, and without understanding the meaning, itās definitely harmful to this group. Iām just saying that itās not āfull stopā - the idea is commenting on the irony of controlling womenās sexuality by policing their appearances and behavior. itās a much deeper debate and thereās a lot of art and scholarly discourse on it if you choose to get into it.
Yall are naming things like doctors and cops too. Thatās not a culture or religion. Everything is too sexualized for you and it really shows. Iām not an idiot. I understand the idea of appropriation. What I donāt understand is how EVERYTHING can be ātoo sexualizedā. If I wanna dress as a damn cop and have my ass out, I will, and it will never be that serious.
No and I actually fully acknowledged that. Youāre saying ādonāt disrespect religion and cultureā and then thereās discourse about how prisoners and cops, or doctors, arenāt okay either. So my question is what CAN we wear because if nothing is acceptable that what is okay with you all??
This makes zero sense because if the costumes were far from the professions, they wouldnāt even be identified as the target profession theyāre dressing as lol. Of course the nurse costumes are skimpy and look nothing like actual nurse attire, itās meant to be āsexyā. And historically, nurses DID infact wear those little caps, significantly in the 70s I believe. As well as the dresses, they were just longer. So again, the short attire is purposeful because itās meant to be sexy.
You could make the argument that bad things have happened to people in all professions. Playboy bunnies? Hugh Hefner was horrible. Princesses? Most of them were given to the highest bidder and didnāt get to think for themselves. You just donāt want people to dress up because āone time this happened and youāre making light!!!!ā
No one is stuck on the military. It was brought up what? Twice? In order to make a point. Why are you so stuck on prople not agreeing with the Halloween costumes? And who said I agreed with those costumes? Weāre not talking about playboy bunnies but religion & professions as costumes. And no one is saying you canāt dress up, letās be serious. And you saying āIs not making light of the situationā did not help your case lol, because exactly.
i meanā¦.priests maybe but in my own personal experience being in and around catholic churches and nuns since i was a kid and going to catholic school where i was taught by nuns, i never had any indication at all that that the sisters were anything but kind and loving people. everyone can have different experiences, but the ones i met actually even strongly disapproved of the over sexualization of women by men and talked with my male peers about respecting women
No they arenāt. Not any more likely than other teachers or people with access to little kids at least. Compared to general population, all teachers for students that are minors are more likely to be pedophiles, not because teaching makes someone a pedo but because pedos seek out places that give them access to children.
