That’s not just culture but law, which really sucks. I hate laws made solely from religion because there will always be people existing outside of even the most popular religions

i literally don't care. i'm sick of people pretending like islam is some insanely feminist religion and that all the control it gives men over women is "culture not religion!!!"

"it gave women rights they didn't have!" 1) men originally took those rights 2) yes, in the year 600. this shit isn't progressive anymore

There is feminism within Islam and there is patriarchy within Islam, just like in most major religions. A patriarchal theocracy is going to use Islam to further the subjugation of women, an Islamic feminist is going to use it to promote and advance the rights of women against patriarchal tyranny All the currently existing Muslim cultures are very patriarchal even with that there are only 2 that legally mandate wearing a hijab like this, Iran and Afghanistan; these laws aren’t inherent to Islam

yeah i'm mostly saying that people who try to say religion (islam in this case, but others do this to) don't cause this type of behavior are being delulu

Religion didn’t cause this behavior, tho a behavior was already there and religion is used to justify it

i mean the religious text itself says a woman's voice is worth half a man's because of a "deficiency in her" but okay

Religious texts say conflicting things and a religion is much more than a holy text “I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female – you are equal to one another.” (Qur’an, 3: 195)

Yeah ultimately, I think someone can believe in a religion but also believe that the religious texts were misconstrued by the powerful men writing it down at the time and all of the translations (not the Quran since I don’t think any translations are allowed?) and that it wasn’t the deities’ intention but human corruption that lead to the twisting of religious texts.

I’m personally agnostic but i understand where feminism and religion can coexist!

absolutely. i'm not going to sit here and pretend every muslim is a misogynist, that's wildly inaccurate. there are many muslims fighting for women. i just think it's crazy that it's so frowned upon to talk about how the religion is also used to control women

It’s not an issue to talk about how the religion is used to control women what is an issue is acting like that is specific and essential to Islam, the religion is also used to advance the rights of women and if you’re annoying that part of the dynamic you’re painting an incomplete picture

it was, in the year 600. and there are 100% muslims that use their religion for the good of women. but we see what happens when religion intersects with government, and it's not just christianity that causes problems

Islam is used by feminists in the countries it is widely practiced to advance the rights of women right now, not just in the year 600, and it doesn’t take reinterpretation of things. There are still today many areas where what Islam requires in terms of women’s rights are things we still don’t have even in this country, equal pay is one example of that But yes, it is not just Christianity that is used to subjugate us, Islam and Judaism are as well and that is also important to talk about
