I'm sorry but if you're 25 and still afraid of driving on the highway... I'm gonna need you to grow up, put on your big girls pants, and start TRYING. I have a friend like this and it gets to the point where it's annoying having to drive us everywhere.

Besides drunk and distracted drivers there is nothing more unsafe on the road than a scared driver

you’re not even wrong but acting like anxiety is something you can just get over is crazy 😭 be grateful you obviously don’t know what it feels like

Tell her to get on at early morning or late at night it doesn’t get any easier than that

“I have anxiety about ittttt” so does literally everyone when they first start driving on the highway. Like where we live is designed for cars and long distance highway driving, you just gotta get over that.

Hot take but I don’t want people who don’t feel comfortable driving on the highway driving on the highway bc I don’t want to get in a crash and fucking die

For some reason I can’t reply to your direct comment, but @ #4: That’s valid to say, but I’m not “building resentment” tho 😭 I was just annoyed about *one* thing and I was over it in like half an hour. I just happened to make a post about it bc it helped me feel better. I promise there is no resentment actually being festered

You’re not wrong, but what is the solution for her? Just don’t drive on the highway ever for the rest of her life? She NEEDS that skill for where we live.

Yeah idk, I used to be a little anxious about the highways in the area I moved to a few years ago but I got over it because I had to for my commute. We have some of the most dangerous on ramps and exits in the country but I figured it out within a year

I honestly don’t feel bad for op. They can put on their big girl pants too and refuse to allow ppl to bum rides instead of complaining into the void in an anonymous app. Like let’s put that brain to work mama

She’s done that before cuz she used to work at a news station in the morning, but refuses to go any other time of day “cuz of the cars” Like the cars are always gonna be there…

Even though I’ve have a license and have driven before I’m still scared to drive and I’d rather not risk other people’s safety on the roads so I walk or take Ubers. Sometimes my friends offer to drive me and when they do I pay for their lunch or get them little gifts as an appreciation gift or offer gas money 🤷‍♀️

yeah same! i would always pay for my friends gas if they ever drove me anywhere and if we got coffee or something i’d pay for that too. i can def see how it’d be annoying if your friend was making you go out of your way but if you’re both going to the same place i genuinely don’t see the big deal with getting a ride with someone

Anonymous replying to -> #3 17w

you can, it just takes time and effort. i used to be genuinely terrified of driving anywhere with more than 2 lanes and a speed limit over 40mph, like shaking/sick/hyperventilating over it. exposure therapy fixed that. now i can commute on the hwy to work/school and drive the 4.5hrs on the interstate to go see my family for holidays without being convinced i’m gonna die

I agree! I just don’t think the solution is shaming or making ppl feel bad about it. It’s not going to magically make them start driving. I just think if it bothers you so much stop offering them rides or befriend other ppl who have cars.

that’s not just getting over it though, that’s going to therapy and making little steps to get better. i would know! i had to do the exact same thing lol

I think the main issue is have cities that don’t have good public transportation or car based infrastructure. Even if you do have a car, if it breaks down or you can’t use it for whatever reason you’re in the same position as the ppl you’re complaining about. Walkable cities are beneficial to everyone 🤷‍♀️

exactly!! like it’s 100% true that you need to be able to drive to get around but if giving your friend a ride bothers you THIS much umm. be a big girl and start saying no. and if doing that bothers you just get over it lol

Exactly! Just don’t understand coming to yik yak to complain about ppl who can’t or don’t drive. Thats not inherently the problem, it’s making it other ppls issue. But you do have a level of agency over who you allow in your car.

What’s funny is I actually got over a lot of driving anxiety because I had the open highways late at night/early in the morning for my overnight news shift lol. I totally get being afraid of other drivers bc people are insane but you just have to learn to predict people’s moves

My driving teacher in high school would always say something like “Your parents aren’t being unreasonable when you’re driving, they’ve just seen things you haven’t. Your eyes aren’t trained for driving yet”

You and #4 out here making all these wild assumptions about my character over a yikyak post where I was talking about a small annoyance I have with a friend. Yall are blowing things wayyyy out of proportion. Like it’s an anonymous app. People come here to quickly vent. I’m not SERIOUSLY resenting my friend over this like yall seem to be thinking… I get annoyed with my friends every once in a while. That doesn’t mean it requires a serious sit down conversation.

Like I can make a post about something that annoyed me in the moment, then I can just *let it go* Not everything needs to be “worked out” cuz the issue just isn’t that serious tbh. I can move on from the small issue like that quickly. I just made the post to help me get over the annoyance.

I get that, but I guess my main point is that if she has a habit of doing this consistently maybe it’s worth bringing it up? Idk I just feel like everyone I’ve ignored behavior like this it either gets worse or they just never stop. But if this is out of character for her then I guess dropping it is fine

It’s a challenge she’s had since high school, but me personally, I’m not building “resentment” towards her because of it. Like I’m not thinking about it every time I’m around her. Like it doesn’t impact our friendship in the grand scheme. It’s a minuscule issue, which is why it’s not that serious to me. I was annoyed enough in the moment, which is the reason I made the post, but just bc I made an anonymous post about it, that doesn’t define our whole friendship. I’ve known her since we were 13.

Like if it was that big of an issue, I would’ve escalated it and talked about it with her. We’ve done that before. But this issue was so small, it’s just not worth it. Like we’re both dealing with bigger issues in our lives lol

Respectfully, every single time you get in any sort of vehicle, whether you’re operating it or not, you take that risk. People across the US are constantly learning to drive, whether they’re in a driving school or just learning with another licensed driver. Unfortunately, the risk of getting into a crash is always there. That’s just how people learn to drive, whether it’s on the main road or the highway. The only way to “overcome” driving anxiety is to experience driving.

For instance, that’s why adding a young driver to your insurance makes your rates go up. They are a risk on the road, even if they have their license. That’s because they are an inexperienced driver. As you drive more, you learn the average behaviors of the average driver. That’s how people are able to roughly calculate the speed of an oncoming vehicle while merging into the highway.
