Just found out this falafel spot I’ve been to a couple of times is Israeli and I feel so blindsided and deceived. The menu has such quintessentially Egyptian and Lebanese dishes i wouldn’t have thought it’s Israeli but reading the Google reviews I realize

well the employees being hispanic doesn’t really mean anything. and middle eastern could just be because it’s a variety of cuisines. are you for sure it’s israeli

Mossad doesn’t run the Falafel stand you’re probably fine.

The employees are Hispanic and the restaurant description only call it “Middle Eastern.”

No. As someone born and raised in the Middle East, that apartheid state has zero claim on our region and food.

Falafel likely originated in Egypt, I am Egyptian. Their menu has tabouleh, a Lebanese salad. Couscous, a Moroccan dish.

oh i thought different countries had different variations of the dish like empanadas

They do but that’s not the point here. It’s not problematic for an Egyptian restaurant to serve Moroccan food or vice versa. The issue is Israelis co-opting our food and culture to legitimatize themselves as middle easterners when they are European colonizers who kill and starve actual middle easterner people

I mentioned that as to show I had no outright indication it’s Israeli. I only found out from the Google reviews. I checked the online menu more closely and they called their couscous Israeli so now I’m 100% sure. No actual Middle Eastern would ever say that.

I’m saying no Middle Eastern owned business would refer to anything on their menu as Israeli

Bro shut up I can’t be upset I accidentally supported a business I have serious moral qualms with?

You literally said they were Hispanic workers working at a middle eastern food place. You’re not even sure they’re an Israeli business?

Your moral qualms are a short description of a food.

Are you intentionally obtuse or just dumb? I said I found out through reviews and the description that it’s an Israeli joint bc it wasn’t advertised as such / no visible indication. My moral qualms is with businesses like this who profit off a culture belonging to a people they oppress. I am uncomfortable supporting a place like that, what’s the issue???

Are you familiar with the owners? Other than reviews what evidence is there to say they’re Israeli? It’s not like the business is literally funding the Israeli government. It’s just a small business.

Again, no actual Middle Eastern owned business would ever call anything on their menu Israeli. I don’t care that it’s just a small business, I don’t want to support zionists in any way, shape or form. I take boycotting seriously and I thought this was deceptive of the owners bc they know damn well if they called it an Israeli business, a lot of ppl like myself wouldn’t step foot in there

What’s the couscous made of? There are plenty of regional variations one of which comes from Israel. 😭 You’re speaking on behalf of a lot of people in the world. They had one dish labeled as Israeli, not the menu.

No Egyptian, Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian, or Moroccan owner will call their couscous Israeli—that’s actually offensive and inflammatory you don’t understand. This is the community I was brought up in, we do not frequent Israeli businesses. You’re acting like I’m speaking out of my ass when you don’t know shit

There’s a thing called Israeli Couscous, that’s all I’m saying. But anyways very odd reasoning to quit supporting a small business because they >might< be on unreasonable suspicion Israeli.

Cause as far as I can tell you’re just assuming something. You don’t know who made the website, who the owners are, or anything other than a short description of an item.

I’m talking to an actual brick wall… what part of it’s culturally unacceptable to call anything we consume Israeli is not registering to you? Let’s put our deductive thinking caps on, yeah?

In what world can a person be as dense as you to see that someone could have made a small mistake on the origin of a dish. A dish that has a variety which is called Israeli Couscous due to different grain. It’s not like the business is openly flying anything that directly states they support the Israeli state is it? Or are you reading between the extremely thin lines?
