the materialism of modern day middle school age girls is crazy. Asking their moms to buy them lulelemon, drunk elephant, sol de janeiro, $16 touch land HAND SANITIZERS, etc. like bro when I was in middle school my mom wouldn’t even buy me a $3 eos 😭

This generation of tweens literally have nothing of their own anymore (and what little they did have has now also been “occupied” by adult women) so now they emulate the 20+ year old influencers they follow.

Yeah things like justice, Claire’s, etc are gone now. A lot of tween shows don’t exist anymore. They now wanna act like college girls they see on tiktok now. It’s not “cool now” to look 13 at 13 yrs old. I went to the mall last week and they had bags full of Sephora and Aritzia like huh

to elaborate. a lot of yall are very materialist and social media especially is a place to show off how materialist you are and that is just not a good way to live your life but it also looks very glamorous to young girls who look up to older girls and now have way more access than ever before to see what older girls are actually doing and how they act and dress etc and so they don’t care if it’s $40 that means nothing to them. it’s playing dress up

might i also add, big corporations have stopped catering to kids AT ALL, leading to most kids’ clothing and accessory places going out of business or retracting business. it’s going to have crazy long term effects

there are still toy companies and kids clothing companies etc etc but they’re increasingly for parents because kids can’t buy things their parents can

They are literally erasing young girls from their marketing so they can prey on them early on. We used to have Justice where we could find everything of our dreams including makeup. Doll companies have also shifted their marketing to adult collectors rather than who it’s supposed to be, young girls. There’s also the fact that this generation of tweens doesn’t even have music marketed towards them (all of the Disney girls) Like, why is a 12 year old participating in Brat Summer??????

Yeah but those are younger children, but there’s nothing being catered to that preteen demographic anymore. Like that age group where you’re old enough to be dropped off at the mall with your friends.

exactly. kids/tweens don’t have third spaces anymore, and they’ve been pushed out of things/interests that should’ve been marketed towards them. they also have very little media made for them now, compared to even just 10 years ago

real. my local mall doesn’t let anyone under 21 in alone anymore. nearly nowhere here does actually

Even things like Bratz, Barbie’s, Hello Kitty, etc. have slowly become more for adults to enjoy rather than young kids. Also wdym your mall won’t let anyone younger than 21 alone in??? 😭

because tweens don’t want stuff marketed towards them because it’s obvious it’s being marketed towards kids and they want to emulate the music tastes and fashions and interests of older teenagers they think are cool

they probably don’t want the liability. all these companies main motivation is profit and to them it’s less risky and more profitable to let parents buy their kid a $30 eyeshadow pallet than to develop and sell a $5 one they won’t want because they know that’s not what everyone else is using
