
you know the heat gauge on your dash? it tells you how hot/cold your engine is. if your engine doesn’t warm up, the pistons don’t glide as smooth, and can wear down much faster over time. basically, the warmer the engine, the smoother the pistons will move, as they should slide with ease, so it’s important to let it run for a few mins. this is technically still idling, but it’s different from starting it after sitting all night, versus waiting in a drive through after you’ve been driving
Ive been doing some googling on this topic. this explanation doesn’t really seem to hold up, and most mechanics think that actually driving will more effectively warm up the engine rather than driving. saying that this will cause the pistons to fail also doesn’t make a lot of sense, because there are many other parts that will fail earlier
