Is it true that the Tea app requires a driver’s license to create an account? Because that seems like a lot of information to give to a privately owned app

I heard that it used to but then they changed it but also I actually have no idea if that’s true and I just saw that as a comment

It is definitely true. Tea confirmed it in their statement about the breach on their website. You can find the link it on their Instagram or Threads.

I saw it as a comment too and given that there’s was just a data breach I don’t want to attempt to set up an account to test it just yet so I was asking if that was true.

I am not the biggest tea supporter. I support the apps that came before this, but this app clearly has a moderation problem and people are becoming assholes on the platform. Another problem is the pricing. The alternatives were 100% free. The amount of money I have to pay to use all the features feels like a cash grab.

Well then I definitely not signing up then, that’s way too much information to give to an app like that.

I understand that apps like this need money to stay online. However, given that Tea’s response to the breach did not even acknowledge if they are contacting those affected by the breach, makes me think the team leading this app is the most competent or honest about what the money that they make is being used for.

no no no, the government ID requirement was removed back in 2024. You just need your face as verification that you are a girl, but the company clearly does not have a good track record right now for what they will do with your face.

Oh that’s good I guess, at least for the newer accounts. Face verification sounds flimsy af though considering there was a whole trend of guys on Omegle dressing up as women and messing with people on there. But yeah given everything else that’s going on with the app right now it’s probably best to stick with the other apps.

I have not seen any proof that they actually got through. Just memes on ifunny. People being silly you know.

Unfortunately the wrong app went viral. Bad things always happen for some reason. ☹️

That’s nice I guess. Kinda weird you’re getting downvoted for valid criticism over the app, makes me wonder if they share a parent company with YY.
