Fasting is the most cult-ish ritual a religion can have and I don’t understand how more people can’t see that. It’s not cleansing or healthy especially if it’s dry fasting. It brings you closer to “god” though because you’re susceptible to manipulation

I live with my very strict Muslim family and fasting today since it’s the day before Eid Al adha. It’s so hot, I’m dehydrated and exhausted. I’ve been fasting since before I was required to for practice (started at 8, required after I got my first period at 11). I credit Ramadan for my unhealthy eating and drinking habits

I’m 21 now and applying to med school so I’ve learned how there’s literally no health benefit to this ritual even tho I was told otherwise as a kid as a justification. This is totally different from intermittent fasting which is ofc effective for some ppl but no doctor would ever recommend a 12 year underweight girl intermittent fast much less dry fast for a whole month from dusk till dawn

as someone who has a genetic health condition that I didn’t know about- fasting(I used to fast) gave me severe malnutrition issues/other problems bc of the condition. one of the requirements for keeping my body in check is literally no fasting, so fasting also can be dangerous if you have something you didn’t know you have

i think instead of focusing on the health reasons, focus on WHY you’re fasting. who are you fasting for? what is the history of fasting in islam? what does it make you feel? i totally understand that using religion to manipulate and control your kids is INSANE WORK LIKE????? it’s genuinely awful and im sorry you have to go through that. Islam is a journey and it’s supposed to be for YOU no one else. i hope you feel better and i hope all your duas and fasts are accepted <3

Oh believe me, I’ve thought about this every which way along with various other aspects of the religion. I am well aware of the connection to charity through fasting and experiencing the plight of the poor; I just don’t think that’s the real reason (imo control is). It’s not a journey I want to partake in and I’ve completely rejected the faith along with organized religion broadly. However, I am not in a safe place to denounce it given I live with family.

that’s fair ᴖ̈ i’m sorry that it’s caused you pain - i’d love to make dua for you if you’ll allow me to? i do hope you find a safe space one day where you can find your own path <3

Is my family anecdotally toxic? Yes, but they truly have been living by the book according to salafism and consistently engagingwith sheyookh in decision making. So my issue isn’t just personal as it is ideological. The more science I learned, and the more I’ve learned abt the historicity of Abraham’s religions in connection to sociological paradigms, I truly don’t think there’s any basis for their arguments on the existence of the divine. But natural phenomena are used to bolster the stories
