how to bring up getting tested for ADHD to my dad without admitting that I’ve paid attention (close to fully) in maybe 5 classes this entire semester

I have adhd and it’s way more than just trouble focusing. If you truly believe you have it, then tell him that it takes you a considerable amount of time to do assignments, time actually passes a lot faster than you think and you often forget things so you just want an answer to know for sure so you can figure out better ways to combat what you’ve been experiencing.

I sort of expect him to just blame it on the phone and me (of course, it is partially me regardless of +/-) but my habits and abilities when it comes to focus/studying/any tasks including home chores align a lot more closely with my friends who have adhd vs those without. he’s very strict when it comes to grades (has been called an “honorary asian dad”) so I’d be worried about him making me quit my job, quit my sorority, or pay for my semester if he finds out I haven’t been doing great.

Girl why do you need to bring it up with your dad???? Get out of this loop where you need approval from your parents to help your life, YOU ARE GROWN👏

I’m still very dependent on my parents, and by choice, I’m really close with them but when it comes to my dad failures are just something that he has a hard time accepting. I’m not sure how I’d go about it considering it’s their health insurance and money that would be going towards it.

I’ve been considering bringing it up to my GP once I get one (I moved recently) but I’m struggling a lot with school and getting a bit impatient and bringing up anything medical can just be a bit awkward. I’ve been meaning to get a blood panel test since I have a history of deficiencies and bringing it up at that appointment if it’s with a GP is pretty much the only idea I have so far.

College student is not that grown. Most can’t even drink legally and college you could still be dependent on parents in terms of finances, insurance, etc

There’s a lot of other things but that’s what really got me wondering if it’s time to ask. I don’t really know the full spectrum. I don’t struggle much with impulsivity, which I know is a symptom but I also have the organizational skills of a toddler and I’m super forgetful. I try about every method under the sun for locking in whether it’s studying or cleaning or time management or keeping track of time. I also struggle to hold conversations and have to stop myself from talking over others.

I typed that during class after an exam but now I can think more lol. I have a lot of trouble starting tasks too, I forget what the name is for it but something like doing dishes will take me an hour or two just because I feel “paralyzed” mentally I guess? I’m not really the best at describing things and I’ve been awake for 28hrs atp. When I actually get to studying, I’ll get maybe a half hour of actual studying in in 4-6 hours because I just can’t get myself to even start it.

My sister has ADHD, which gives me ~30% chance, and my father is not diagnosed but claims he likely has it- that would be 57% but I won’t use that number as it’s not official. But really while I appreciate your input, I don’t think it’s wrong for anyone to feel the need to get tested with any amount of reasonable suspicion. I’ve had teachers tell me they think I have it, including one that was a nurse and has a psych degree.

I’ve had a lot of friends with ADHD recommend I get tested or be surprised when I say I don’t have it, so I’m at least interested in getting input from someone who can give me a definite and official answer over friends and teachers.

I’ve tried to come up with just about every potential excuse under the sun as to anything else it could be but nothing really seems to have clicked or worked. Brain fog was a big one I assumed it was and I’ve tried just about every memory and vitality support supplement under the sun. I take l theanine, b vitamins, ginkgo, ashwsganda and am even considering peptides at this point. Even if it’s something else I think getting tested would give me some sort of input as to what I can change.

Oh my goodness I can’t believe I said I wasn’t impulsive I genuinely do not have savings even though I have my rent, groceries paid for and literally spend only spend my money on myself while working ~25hrs a week. I’m currently at like $60 which is “good” for me. I have almost 0 control over how much I spend or what I spend it on.

I wast just saying that adhd is more than attention issues because that’s what is known to most people. People joke or think they have adhd just from that alone and they think that’s all there is to it. I’ve even had people tell me “you don’t seem like you have adhd” like uhh how should I act then lmao. I just wanted to clarify that. Like I said earlier, if you truly believe that you have it, you could try telling your dad something along the lines of time consumption and forgetting.
