They didn’t do anything to “deserve” that compassion. 🤦 however allowing someone to die and allowing someone to experience the nature of social attitudes are different. You don’t have to do anything to deserve for me to save your life (if I can.) but you shouldn’t apply the logic to automatically expecting people to be nice to you socially

I didn’t care about them before I saved them. I cared about them dying. You can’t be mean to other people but still have respect for them. Allowing someone to perish is not the same as being mean on social media
