I’m a college student living east coast. I need a car, but I’ve never bought one before, and I’m worried about financing. Those of you who pay for your own car, did you get new/used, what do you pay per month on your car, and any tips?

You can find them for pretty good prices on fb marketplace! Make sure it comes with registration, especially if it’s a nice car being sold for cheap that “needs to go” (might be stolen 😬) I don’t think my insurance / other info would be good recs for those going for absolute cheapest tho

100% used car. a new one will lose a ton of value as soon as you drive it off the lot and will continue to decline in value. opt for one that’s less than 7yrs old if you can. negotiate negotiate negotiate. bring someone w you that has bought a car before. if you have an older man that can come then definitely bring them (it’s a sexist industry). watch youtube videos on how to inspect a used car, it’ll save you thousands and a lot of headaches.

and replaceability of parts that are used quickly, some models can only have certain manufacturers and/or are extremely expensive to replace certain parts

personally, i don’t recommend fb marketplace bc you’ll likely get scammed and it’s harder to deal w if you do end up having issues w the car. dealerships tend to have better rules around lemon cars. opt for a loan through a credit union over a bank. they don’t profit off your loan and tend to be more “for the people”. go in person to the credit union before the dealership. talk to them about ur budget and what you want. they’ll help w the rest.

it’s fine if there’s a few features you want (i.e. sunroof, heated seats, ect) but at the end of the day those features will not seem as important in the long run. research research research. if you find a car u like, research recalls and common issues w it. i recommend the bigger names. honda civics are beasts and will definitely be the cheapest and most reliable. only buy ford if you’re getting a suv or truck. VW is good but parts are expensive.
