yall realize how much hate she gets for showing her sexuality so openly bc it isn’t ladylike and is scandalous? her choosing to show her sexuality and sing about sex (like men do without ppl so much as batting an eye, mind you) is actively fighting against those gender roles and expectations. also, immediately assuming that this album cover isn’t satire or some form of commentary is crazy work. pride in femininity and sexuality ≠ sexism and misogyny, and thinking otherwise fuels the patriarchy

choice feminism. intersectional feminism. women should have the choice to portray their sexuality as they choose 🤷‍♀️ sabrina carpenter is not the portrayal or voice of every woman

calling it feminism just bc it’s a choice doesnt make it feminist; not every performance of sexuality is empowering just bc a woman’s doing it

have you considered its empowering her? why do others need to feel empowered by someone else’s choices? especially their own performance of sexuality

I don’t think Sabrina carpenter had ever claimed to be a feminist so I’m not sure why people have been placing that label on her

She’s not a feminist, quit trying to force that on her when she’s clearly not. Even if she did claim to be a feminist not every choice that a woman makes is inherently feminist just because a woman made it, that’s such a middle school level understanding of feminism. For ex, a woman could have made the free choice to vote for trump last November and might have felt empowered by it, but was it actually a feminist action? Nope! Same thing applies here even if it’s not exactly the same scenario.

we aren’t talking about politics tho. it’s about basic shit like pro choice, work life or stay at home wife or mom or both, etc.

upvote 6 downvote
user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 12w

but this is not any way similar to voting for trump. how is her direct choice affecting other women? how is this directly disempowering other women? she is not responsible for how men view her album or their actions because of it. she is not stripping women of their power. or saying women HAVE to be this way nor is she saying any other woman is this way other than herself. how is that inherently anti feminist.

I think you underestimate how much politics has to do with our every day lives. We don’t live in a vacuum, the world around us influences all of our actions and some of those actions might not be “feminist” per se. I’m not saying anyone has to be perfectly feminist 100% of the time because nobody can ever be perfect, but we have to stop calling actions “feminist” based on the sole fact that it was done by a woman who says she feels “empowered” by it.

Sabrina’s album cover might have been “empowering” for her but calling it “feminist” is a stretch. Not saying we need to go out on a witch hunt after her for it but it helps no one to try and label it as “feminist”

It might not be a direct action that affects women but nonetheless we’re allowed to not be comfortable with an image that looks like stuff like this

Anonymous replying to -> #7 12w

sure. no one has to be comfortable with anything. i think the key point here, imo is that sabrina has put herself in this position. the woman in this picture is bound to this man who is actively hitting her, and its her husband. this photo is actively stating that men should hit their wives for better coffee. sabrina’s album cover is not stating women or men should be treated a certain way, just her. its fine to be uncomfortable, but not fine to claim its setting all women back

But why is femininity and sexuality synonymous with kneeling on the ground and being pulled by your hair to you? Everyone seems to think that female sexuality and submissiveness and sexual degradation are the same thing. They are not.

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 12w

first, sexuality* (in this case) refers to her personal sexuality. maybe that’s what she likes. her liking submissiveness and sexual degradation does not make her pride in her sexuality any less valid that the men who talk about being dominant. second, this is once again assuming that the cover isn’t some kind of satire or commentary

upvote -1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #12 12w

Her art lacks the depth and subversiveness necessary to pull off satire. If your satire lacks clarity of purpose, it’s not satire, you’re just engaging in whatever you’re claiming to satirize

upvote 8 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 12w

part of the art is the album itself, so you can’t make such a definitive claim that it isn’t satire until the music comes out, so we don’t truly know whether or not it’s satire and cannot knock that option out

I think you’re describing a more egalitarian view, feminism is not just about securing rights and freedom for women but also believing that misogyny must be eliminated for our liberation. I don’t think she has made any statements about this nor has she written about this (to my knowledge; correct me if I’m wrong). All women are not inherently feminists. That being said, I don’t think she’s setting women back and if people really cared about feminism there are more important causes to focus on.

This is so unfair to say. Yk all the valid arguments made against the cover and u still INSIST only saying sh*t like this. The problem with the cover was never it being “sexy” it was people claiming crawling at the feet of a man was “satire” and “deep”. Her music is NOT deep enough for that cover down vote me into oblivion idc that’s my truth

ok. weeeell if its not i feel like thats an entirely different conversation than assuming one woman (being herself & making decisions for herself) has the power to completely set back feminism. an important social/political belief system that (if im reading the comment right) should only be reserved for women who ‘deserve’ it? if carpenter isnt being a feminist woman correctly she doesnt deserve those benefits?

The way some of you dictate what feminism should look like is the reason why feminism isn’t broadly looked at or acknowledged you just feed the patriarchy little do you know and the societal standards of how women express their sexual desire and femininity 🤨
