Because communist framework infamously doesn’t seem to work out well for citizens of countries that practice it and so people assume that anyone claiming to be a communist is just trolling people to get a reaction.

Also because a lot of people on the internet are looking for a reaction, good or bad, from the masses so that’s automatically the assumption that people will make about whatever you say that someone else doesn’t agree with.

I just didn’t know that so many ppl, esp ppl who claim to be “progressive” still fall for red scare shit so much they think you must be trolling if you oppose capitalism, like that’s craazzzyyy

Most people who are progressive don’t really want communism, they want socialism or socialist change/programs. Communism is seen as to the extreme of the liberal spectrum and it doesn’t help that the US education system teaches about communist countries, past and present, as lesser than or fallen due to communism practices, if they cover those countries at all.

I mean Marx and Engels used communism and socialism interchangeably and most ppl today recognize socialism just as the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. It just means the end of class society and that the workers own the means of production vs the capital owning (ruling) class. It’s not some scary red scare boogeyman lol And most American progressives are liberals or social democrats (like Bernie) at best, not socialist

I think a lot of American people view it as scary because that’s what they’re taught to believe. K-12 education reinforces it all throughout the beginning of their lives, and most parents are going to be right leaning or moderate and unlikely to discuss communism or socialism at home. It’s inadequate and misleading education to blame for the most part, not just people being scared randomly
