Do you feel that it is important for sexuality to be represented in the media and do you feel that you are properly represented? If not, why?

Well yes, I’m very lucky because my family is completely fine with me being a lesbian and I’m also a fem so people don’t necessarily assume that I’m gay. I typically notice differences when I’m with my girlfriend. We have to be careful in public because we’re in the south😬. Also, although my accepting extended family members got married at my age or earlier, they do not expect us to get married as much as I thought it would happen. I remember one of my cousins was dating her now husband for

a while and once it hit the year mark, everybody was asking when they were getting married. I’ve been dating my girlfriend for almost 3 years and when I’ve mentioned marrying my girlfriend in the future, my cousins look at me like i’m going crazy 🧍‍♀️

pt 3. I’ve also had a lot of straight women misinterpret me mentioning being gay as me telling them I’m interested in them. I along with many other queer women do actually still see this out and about.

I do feel like it’s important for there to representations of different sexualities in media. I also think that the representation that lesbians have currently could use a few changes. In my experience, most plots of notable lesbian movies has 1. a cheating plot, 2. A shallow understanding of what the queer community is as a whole, 3. Is about minors exploring their sexuality. 4. Unequal power dynamics, and/or 5. is extremely depressing.

Also on why representation matters: In a lot of places, being queer is seen as demonic. For a lot of my friends, they had no idea that they could be queer and at the same time, have a “normal” healthy, happy life.

I think our situations are a bit different and I wish I could give more specialized advice according to what you are experiencing but this is my best shot at it: I think that first a lot of the times, when women are interested in other women they get nervous that they will come off as predatory because it is a very prevalent stereotype against queer women. Deconstructing that idea within yourself is always a good way to start.

yes that makes sense i think a big part of it for me personally is ive had a lot of trouble keeping female friends my whole life and girls tend to be fake towards me or make fun of me so idk lol but thank you ill think about that too

Pt2. I would also say for the being scared of women part- It can be scary, especially if you don’t know if the woman you are into is queer. I think the pressure might be taken off a little bit in queer spaces. If you’re of age and there’s a lesbian bar (or gay bar cause there’s so few lesbian bars🙂‍↕️) near you, I would test drive your flirtability there. You might be nervous because you want to make sure you are respectful which is definitely honorable. I think figuring out that balance is

pt 3. a skill that you can further with practice. Know that you might fumble occasionally and that it’s okay to not be the most experienced person ever. Learning is a part of life. Also, as a lesbian, I’m sorry for how bigoted some of us are about bi women. You might come into contact with it a lot and it is genuinely so so harmful😔. Nothing is wrong with you, you are not broken🫶

I think part of what could help is trying to make some platonic friends that are women so it feels less foreign to you. I’m not an expert tho I’m not well versed in this specific scenario. I do hope that it gets easier for you 🫶
