I know we're all mad about Cornell and abuse of women in general and we should be but abolishing Greek life isn't the answer. My school kicked some frats off campus and they just went underground and can't be regulated now which is so much worse

i agree to an extent. banning greek life is probably gonna have serious negative consequences for the black communities (bc african american greek organizations are different and more community based), and regulations are important.

I think we need to work together with kids in the Greek community to enhance accountability and make programming to prevent these things more effective. Also it's just not realistic. So many people are too invested in these communities for us to effectively get rid of them completely. This will only make the issue worse. We had a group who was kicked off campus and lost their national org recognition and now it's just a house of guys with no oversight. A few years ago at one of their parties

i mean when women are regularly gangraped when they ARE regulated… (bc there’s no way someone can say free pussy in a gc and trust that people won’t freak out unless it’s happened before) honestly what’s the difference? at least having it off campus will make it less accessible

There was a mass roofie incident where the whole party somehow got drugged. And nothing happened because there was no one to hold them accountable

For me, off campus is like one block from campus. It's not at all less accessible and people will go because of the demand for parties and party culture that's college. My college does a lot of programming and holds Greek life to a stricter standard than any other campus group which I think is great. I think we can always do better though. I think the more realistic and effective solution is having a zero tolerance policy and actually more university involvement along with better programming

it’s honestly wishful thinking to believe that frats can be held accountable through policy and uni involvement. if that was going to happen, it already would have. something has to seriously change and while i don’t think it’s a perfect solution, banning frats would at least send a message that behavior isn’t tolerated

I mean I think the hardest part is you need proof to have a case. I will always believe survivors but legally to pursue anything a case is needed. That being said i actually think it depends on what the university system does to work with these groups obviously not all universities handle it the same so I don't think a true blanket statement can be made. It may send a message but in terms of tangible safety I think it makes the situation way worse

yeah, but it’s not like having it on campus is any safer than having it be a block away. women are still being raped. men are still being killed with hazing. people keep saying that it’s only going to make the problem worse but genuinely how?? all the awful things people are worried about are already happening, and in a lot of cases uni involvement just protects the rapists. the best solution is just to completely ban them both on and off campus

My university doesn't actually have any Greek houses on campus. I absolutely agree that having them a block away vs on campus changes nothing. That's my point tho whether or not they are physically on campus downy stop people from going to them and wanting to be involved demand is too high. I'm saying banning them is worse because there's no one to hold them accountable when bad stuff happens and no rules to keep them in line. I think we need more school involvement not less. I know that this

Currently varies from school to school but I'm saying being more involved helps ensure more education for these groups and accountability. Kicking them "off campus" doesn't mean they go away it just means there's no one enforcing safety which yeah is definitely worse

Universities can't control what happens off campus that's the issue

I know not all schools are involved and I think that's the problem. My university makes all orgs participate in a certain amount of programming and each org has to have a certain percent of their chapter attend. I think this helps ensure education for things like hazing and SA and alcohol and drugs. If orgs don't participate they cannot recruit on campus or have any events on campus and are listed as not affiliated with the university and the student body is discouraged from interacting

It ensures they participate essentially. That being said I think the programming itself could likely be improved. But I think having orgs participate in things like this sort of forces them to think and be involved in conversations about these issues. They're also held to stricter standards at my school than any other student org. Which is sort of unfair but also very much keeps them in line. I think more schools should do this

Greek life was so big for marginalized people entering college for the first time and that doesn't just go away because some fucked up white boys did fucked shit
