yes go “i wanted to ask your thoughts on homosexuality” and leave it at that. He’ll fill in the rest. Dont say anything else

That’s a great one. Other more subtle things can be mentioning someone who is gay or trans (not a friend; he'll know he's expected to be nice about friends. Celebrity, perhaps?) and, if possible, mention that part of their identity somehow (mention a gay guy's husband, for instance)
