It’s actually not primarily music based, it’s fashion, music, political ideology, and outlook on life. “Everything’s fucked but let’s find the beauty it anyway.” Vs emo “everything’s fucked and there’s nothing we can do about it” Or punk “everything’s fucked, let’s fuck it up in a different way (hopefully better)”

It is primarily music based. That’s where the whole subculture came from. But you’re absolutely right about the ideology stuff. I think it’s a combination of both, a lot of the goth bands will make music ABOUT that outlook on life.
