Whenever I wanna get proficient at pushups again I challenge myself to do 50 a day every day from whatever position is best for me (ie: knees, elbows out vs in, wall pushups, etc) and then you make yourself do all 50 even if you have to split it up through the day. By the mid point of the challenge I am usually able to get almost all 50 in a row semi easily. By the end of the month I can usually do 50 in a row and then sometimes I’ll up the challenge to 100. And I am a very very skinny person
it’s not linear for everyone - it depends on physiology, muscle mass, and how much you’re training. triceps, delts, and core are mainly involved in the push up movement so make sure to train be hitting those muscle groups 2x frequency/week (e.g. cuffed tricep extensions). that will transfer over to being able to do pushups; pushups are a lot harder to also progress on because you can’t add/decrease weight like a machine so i’d prioritize lifting to get to that goal
I don’t have a lot of muscle, but I also don’t have a lot of fat either. And i use my arms an average amount between work and school. So when I do this I’m not like going nuts with workouts every day leading up to it. It’s literally starting from scratch every time and it sucks but it’s easy if you stay with it. That’s what I do! Hope it helps!
