Hi everyone… I’ve recently been diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension which for those who don’t know is basically fainting when moving to quickly or suddenly. I have also lost about 70 pounds recently from a lot of walking and a diet change. (PART 1)

I also have orthostatic hypertension for over a year now (specifically POTS) and it took a bit to get back into heavy lifting but I continued to go to the gym when my body allowed me to. I started with biking and worked my way up to running because cardio that can help your body. To keep muscle I would use bands/ light db and do exercises that you can do sitting/lying first and work your way up. Always listen to your body so you don’t over do it and make your symptoms worse.

How fast did you lose the weight? Are you having bone issues? Have you been evaluated for POTS?

I’m posting this because I need some exercise help in getting my body toned now that I’ve lost the fat. My doctor has all but banned me from practically everything at the gym like lifting weights and using weight machines… I just don’t know what I can do to tone instead. Just thought I’d see if anyone had ideas… 🩷 (PART 2)

“Toning” requires building muscle, so maybe see if you can get someone to accompany you at the gym and see if you can go

yoga! stretching and mobility is great for your body and prevent you from physically deteriorating so fast as you age. it will keep you close to the floor to in case something happens!

I lost the weight in a span of about 2 years. I have been evaluated for POTS but the tilt table test showed no indication which is why they are diagnosing me with the orthostatic hypotension.

To my knowledge no bone issues… never have even broken a bone before.

I do typically go with my boyfriend or with my best friend just incase but I’d also like alternatives… just thought I’d ask about and see others ideas.

How long did they do the tilt table test? I had a friend who had it twice because the first time was too short of a time period and showed no issues; it took 17 minutes before it actually affected her, so she was diagnosed w POTS the second time

It took about 25 minutes before my blood pressure shot straight down and I almost fainted

Are you underweight at this point? You shouldn’t be nutrient deficient at that loss rate, so you likely don’t have any bone issues. Why is the doctor banning you from the gym? Are they worried that you might faint while working out and injure yourself?

Oh gosh I am not underweight I promise. Still could lose some if anything but I want to start tightening and shaping instead of just losing. And yeah the doctor banned me because the activity excursion causes me to blackout or at best get super dizzy. So yeah he’s worried I could hurt myself but he also doesn’t want me to faint if we can keep it at bay.

I have pretty bad balance and have a slight tumor so I’ve always been kinda cautious about yoga because I thought you had to have like crazy good balance to do it but I might try it anyways… I’m sure I can find ways to work around the balance issues

That makes sense. Did you ask him what you could do to tone? I don’t know enough medicine to make appropriate recommendations (which I’m sure is true for the vast majority of people on yikyak)

Balance is a skill you can improve! Look up “yoga for people with bad balance” and try some of the YouTube videos (if ur doctor says it’s okay). Perhaps surround urself with cushioning too, just to be safe

We are looking into some medication and I totally didn’t think people on yikyak would know much about my health stuff I just was curious about my body physique because I’ve already worked so hard I don’t want to stop

Gotcha! I’d ask doctor before trying anything out, but there’s a lot of non-gym stuff you can do to build muscle. I’d suggest flutter kicks, leg lifts, potentially hip bridges (definitely go slow and see how you feel, ideally ask ur doctor), and small arm circles

You also might want to look up POTS-friendly workouts! There seems to be a good amount of them online :) I think laying down will be your friend

So just slow and steady? I’m banned from the gym for at least a month (for now). We are trying to get things regulated but I’ll ask my doctor when I go back if I can slowly start lifting. I never was able to get into lifting because of the fainting and dizziness but maybe I was just pushing my body too far.
