Hmm, counting calories is really going to be your best bet but eating lots of large meals throughout the day will do it! 20-30 lbs is quite a lot - that would be 70,000 surplus calories!!! If you can, start lifting heavy. Make sure you eat at least 1g/lb of protein a day. Protein and fats and carbs, eat lots of them. Don't do any cardio.

High-quality sources of fats and protein are going to be your friends- avocados, nuts, beef, barley, and full-fat dairy are all great options, but there are hundreds more. Also fun stuff like pasta, fortified cereals, and fortified breads. And never ever neglect ur fiber intake- that will also help ur body adjust to your revamped dietary plan.

Eat loads of olive oil, avocados, nuts & seeds. Supa healthy & super calorie-dense. it might sound counterintuitive but try to become a salad enjoyer. u can make them super fucking caloric while still getting in hella fiber

I can only think about doing this with unhealthy foods

Add nut butter to every meal it makes sense on. Add olive oil to stuff. Eat extra butter. That type of thing.

i don’t understand why people give the advice of don’t do cardio. it’s important for your cardiovascular health beyond the numbers on the scale and what you see in the mirror.

I agree! Long term health definitely involves cardio, for sure. Someone who is 20-30lbs overweight really can't afford to burn any extra calories, though. That's like heart failure levels of underweight.

Thank you!! I'm pretty open to trying everything since I'm just trying to put on the weight and muscle. I'm trying to squat with the bar. I have joint problems so I'm looking for things to do that don't completely make things harder on my body.

"Healthy" is just a buzzword with no one correct definition. If you're 20lbs underweight, then a 1000 calorie breakfast made of twinkies and bacon IS the healthy choice. Healthy is what's good for YOUR body. Your body doesn't care if the calories come from a package or a farm, it just needs them. Lots of them. Energy is energy.

I recommend a calorie counting app, where you can input activity and what you've eaten. Focus more on the overall balance of macros at the end of each day than the "healthiness" of each meal.

& if u can find an app, i would recommend disabling calorie count but still tracking ur macros. when u try to hit a macro ratio, focus on what u can add to ur diet as opposed to take away
