depends on your goals. but you can look up your maintenance calories through an online calculator and then do a deficit or surplus (or just maintaining) depending on you goal. or if you’re just doing it based on vibes then track your weight and if it’s not doing what you want, you’re not eating the right amount and adjust from there
if your goals are more specific (which they likely are), like losing fat, or building muscle, or both with body recomp, then that’s when you look at macros and the actual content of the food you’re eating. but for over/under eating it’s gonna be about weight going up or down
i think so? i increased my calories kind of a lot since i realized i wasn’t eating enough and i think i’m closer to maintenance now. i want to build muscle and maybe use a little weight (my abs aren’t as visible as i want them to be but obviously you can’t spot reduce fat). it’s been around 2 weeks since i changed what im eating but not sure how long it will take until i’ll know if this is working
I mean you’ll build muscle much easier if you’re at or above maintenance. and you can lose fat at the same time. muscle weighs more than fat so you may not see the scale changing that much if you’re building muscle while losing fat. if you eat around maintenance it’s pretty easy to do both of those things at the same time. muscle also burns more calories at rest than fat does so just by having more muscle you will burn more calories and lose fat.
