They work well for building the lumbar muscles plus the hamstrings get a good work out too

If your technique is good they're perfectly fine, people just don't take the time to master their form. And the reason why people are obsessed is because they're arguably the best hinge for hamstrings

Yeah but there’s sooo many ways of doing it safer and just better. Like a literal rdl, or a back ext, or a good morning. Going straight leg dl turns it more into a hinge and a hinge should never be a heavy movement. And how many people are genuinely cutting they’re intensity back 40% to make a true good intensity range for that movement without putting their spine at risk

Less glute involvement than an RDL and less quad and glute involvement than a conventional deadlift.
