If you are trying to do a calorie deficit for the first time, DO NOT try to do an extreme deficit (1000+ cal deficit per day). You will more than likely not do it properly, leading to poor health, or quitting your deficit. Only do it if you know how to.

That said, if you are experienced with dieting and are confident that you can stay on top of your nutrition, then there is nothing wrong with doing an extreme deficit. I personally would much rather spend a few weeks in a more extreme deficit than spend months on a moderate deficit, and I am confident enough in my nutritional management that I can be in an extreme deficit while maintaining my energy levels, gym performance, and overall health.
