5’10, 210-215 lb female collegiate athlete here competing at the D1 level. I’ve been taking 1st phorm creatine, but get cramps once a month from it. Is it normal or am I not drinking enough water? I usually put it in a smoothie pre-workout. Any tips?

Are you sure you know it’s from the creatine? It could be a multitude of other factors that are causing you to cramp. If you’re a D1 athlete I’d talk to ur trainer and also add more electrolyte drinks into your diet. When you play high level like that you have to be so conscious about your electrolyte intake. LMNT drinks or salty drinks are perfect for when you are training etc. is it cramping in a specific area? Or all over???

ALSO if it is a specific area you are cramping like your calf/legs, you may want to roll it out more and take more incentive to roll out and warm up before, I’m not saying you don’t, but you may want to form a pre-practice, or pre-game routine, and a post-practice, post-game routine like rehabbing routine before and after so make sure you are really really getting ur muscles and body ready for practice or a game or whatever it may be, a lot of high level athletes neglect that until they get hurt

My assumption is you’re not drinking enough water. I would get chest and tricep cramps if I didn’t drink enough water consistently.

Spicy food. Thins the blood. Reduces cramps.

It is the creatine bc it has happened twice before. And it’s my stomach, like I get stuck to the toilet and get bad cramps from it. I talked to my coach and he said maybe I didn’t mix the creatine up enough with water.

Ah okay, yea stomach cramps are rhe worst, weird question but does it happen when you are due for your period? Because I’ve literally dry scooped creatine before on an empty stomach and that hasn’t happened. Creatine is not supposed to do that

No. Which when it happened the first time I had never felt that feeling before. Like I’ve never had period cramps in my life, so feeling those cramps took me out!

How can I drink more water? Like I know just do it. But sometimes I get side tracked and whatnot. I used to be good about it in high school bc I had classes back to back and would drink the water out of boredom, but now I just forget or are too focused on something else

Whew girl I feel bad for you that sounds horrible :( honestly the only thing I’d recommend is totally drinking more water and maybe if you want, have a meal when u do have ur creatine. It could be the creatine brand maybe? I take the pro-GNC creatine monohydrate 5g serving powder either in my protein shakes or pre-workout or recovery smoothies and it never hurts my stomach, but everyone is diff, if it keeps happening please go see a doctor and get it looked at :( I wish I could help more

Also to add, I hate drinking water, I sometimes add fruit to mine or like zero calorie flavor thingies :( it is hard though, the only thing I’d recommend is getting like a big 64oz Stanley or insulated water bottle filling it and trying your best to drink that whole thing at first once a day then progress to that whole bottle and a 2nd fill

I bring a water bottle to class and have to finish it before it ends. Easy 24 oz and I usually have 4 classes a day so 96 oz. Add in drinking for meals and I’m at my water goals. Just have to find how you can trick yourself into drinking more. Make it a competition w yourself or something
