For those who are depressed, has the gym or exercise genuinely helped you? I’ve been working out for a few months now and love the changes in my body, but am still depressed

Yes, it helps me regulate something when my emotions are out of control. And if I can whenever I get bad thoughts I rep out 20 pushups and instantly feel better. Idk the science behind it but shit it works

There was a study I read a couple years ago out of Australia or New Zealand that tracked diet and its effect on depression symptoms. Those who ate whole foods and largely the Mediterranean diet saw a great improvement in their symptoms compared to the control group eating the standard American diet

I bet if you paired this with exercise you’d see a noticeable improvement in your depression symptoms!!

It won't fix genuine clinical depression but it definitely helps with emotional regulation

Yeah, I'm still depressed (very much so at times) but I assume it'd be a hell of a lot worse without lifting

I won’t say it works all the time. Sometimes my thoughts are so bad that I view the workout as more of a punishment than therapeutic. But emotions are about trial and error so ya win some ya lose some

It's definitely my third place so I'll sometimes just be hanging out reading or eating between lifts/cardio and spend half the day there on a weekend when I'm feeling too depressed to be social with anyone but know bedrotting makes it worse
