Hiking is great exercise! Plus, and what I find to be most important. It helps my mental health.

yes. you have no protection against ticks, mosquitoes, or other bugs. nothing to protect you from scrapes or falls, or poison ivy, or sudden bad weather. plus you're fully exposed to the sun, and you can't sit and scoot down rocks like you could in pants. i highly recommend a pair of jeans or breathable pants, tucked into long socks. you do NOT want a tickborne illness

It’s not actually that crazy if it’s just for a day hike. Everything mentioned can be rectified with bug spray or sun screen. Weather isn’t an issue. Rain never killed anyone and if it’s anything more than rain you have bigger issues. Don’t touch plants with three leaves and that problem goes away entirely.

It's your choice to take those risks. But you should know what the risks are. As an aside, most bug sprays either aren't super effective for ticks or can't be safely applied to skin. I recommend impregnating your socks and pants with permethrin instead. Lyme disease and alpha-gal (acquired red meat allergy) are no joke.

If clothes offer any further protection from tics it’s marginal at best. I would actually argue wearing something like she is reduces the risk of those illnesses because you can spot said tics and take care of them without faster than most people that wear long clothing can. We can argue all day about whether bug spray works or not but the permethrin is a good tip I’ll give you that.
