Actually in my physics class gamma equals 1/sqrt(1-Beta^2) where beta equals v/c.

To be fair the greek letters get reused for different variables all the time. In fluid mechanics, gamma is the specific weight of any given fluid
(Density times Gravity, or Weight divided by Volume)
