It’s easy to say “that’s bad” in retrospect but many people are caught up in the zeitgeist and peer pressured into norms/beliefs. Being self-aware of what beliefs are yours and which are imposed by your circumstances is difficult. This is why historical analysis must be sharp because the historian must strive to comprehend mindset of a period when they are discussing it. If you don’t understand the norms and customs of a place or period, you cannot properly dissect it nor learn from history

Most people are still falling for Nazi propaganda at this very moment. Most people think 1930s Germany was a rich, technologically advanced society instead of a bunch of poor people with an obscene amount of debt and hardly any cars. Goebbels was so goated at his job his voice still speaks today, and despite having access to facts, people still believe him.
